The RCI supports the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.
Info
The aim of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials. RCI addresses the core problem of climate change, which is extracting and using additional fossil carbon from the ground that will eventually end up in the atmosphere. Companies are encouraged to focus on phasing out fossil resources and to use renewable carbon instead. The initiative wants to drive this message, initiating further actions by bringing stakeholders together, providing information and shaping policy to strive for a climate-neutral circular economy. Definition Renewable Carbon: Renewable Carbon entails all carbon sources that avoid or substitute the use of any additional fossil carbon from the geosphere. Renewable carbon can come from the biosphere, atmosphere or technosphere – but not from the geosphere. Renewable carbon circulates between biosphere, atmosphere or technosphere, creating a carbon circular economy.

We’re excited to announce the publication of the new RCI Scientific Background Report titled: "𝗘𝗨 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 - 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀, 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿“. 🚢 🚗✈️ This report highlights that current EU regulations in road transport, aviation and shipping sector create a unique long-term horizon for #RenewableCarbon based fuels through defined targets. On the one hand, this creates a secure ecosystem for investment and scaling of #sustainable carbon-based fuels in the transport sector. On the other hand, for the chemical and material sector, it severly limits access to the same renewable carbon as a feedstock required for #defossilisation. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁? 1️⃣ A 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 of 𝗘𝗨 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 that impact #Biofuel and #SyntheticFuel and thus demand for renewable carbon. 2️⃣ Three possible 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀 which provide a better understanding of the range of renewable carbon-based fuel demand from the transport sector by 2050. 3️⃣ Insights into the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, highlighting the strong interest of European Commission policy makers. 𝗞̲𝗲̲𝘆̲ ̲𝘁̲𝗮̲𝗸̲𝗲̲-̲𝗮̲𝘄̲𝗮̲𝘆̲𝘀̲ 💡The existing transport regulation directs second-generation biomass to aviation and shipping. 💡There are significant potential synergies between transport and material sectors, e.g. via co-products of SAF production. 💡Industrial biomass utilisation should be open to all feedstocks based on scientific, objective arguments which include land-use efficiency. 💡Electrification of the transport system in combination with transforming carbon-reliant industries enable a sustainable system that utilises #biomass. We hope that this report will serve as a resource for policy makers, industry leaders and researchers seeking to make informed decisions in the development of biofuels and synthetic fuels. 👉 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/enT79DFb #fossilfree #chemicalindustry #energytransition
