Science That Enables Sustainable Packaging Choices
Om os
Our mission is to inform, educate, and develop the sustainable food packaging for the future. We are a conglomerate of 34 countries with over 160 participants from all over Europe and with backgrounds ranging from marketing and design, to material and food science. We want to be an inclusive network with the aim to influence and harmonise the future food packaging while reducing the food waste, limiting the environmental impact of packaging, and influencing decision and policy makers EU-wide.

City of Aarhus (‘or-hoose’) in Denmark 🇩🇰 is running an innovative reusable hot and cold take away cup program. Over 50 coffee shops ☕️ and restaurants offer customers the reusable option. Festivals use them too. And it’s super easy. Within seconds you can return the dirty cup to any of 30 city centre machines with just the tap of a credit or bank card. All washing, sanitation and inspections are done centrally to ensure safe reuse. Over 85% return rate enabling rotations far beyond 25 times making it hands down 🙌 the best eco-option. Next step for the City is to add reusable take away bowls 🥣 and plates. Reuse Revolution is starting here. An amazing collab 👏 between City of Aarhus and Technology provider TOMRA Collection . Take note Cities of the world. It’s time to ditch these single use cups 🥤 and take-away food packaging. And thank you Reloop North America, Elizabeth Balkan for brining US Cities to Denmark to inform, connect and inspire!💕

🌍 This week, we had the privilege of hosting the 4th Circul-a-bility Conference at Aarhus University! Researchers from across Europe (and beyond!) came together to explore the latest advancements in #food #packaging, focusing on safety, sustainability, and circularity, among other topics! 📦 This year, food packaging #reuse was emphasized, with a thought-provoking keynote by Bahar Koyuncu Caylak from Ellen MacArthur Foundation. I also had the opportunity to present results from the R3PACK - Reduce, Reuse, Rethink PACKaging project, alongside Angelos Balatsas-Lekkas from University of Vaasa, who shared insights from initiatives like the recently started STOPP PROJECT. 💡 A highlight was the roundtable discussion I co-organized with Selcuk Yildirim, featuring Davide Mazzanti from sykell, Fernando Rodríguez-Mata from New ERA - New European Reuse Alliance, Diana S. from The LCA Centre B.V., Jeannette Morath from reCIRCLE AG, and Simon R. from City of Aarhus. The exchange of ideas on the future of packaging reuse was truly inspiring! 🙌 A big thank you to Milena Corredig, Ilke Uysal Unalan, and everyone else who helped organize this incredible conference. Looking forward to many more impactful discussions in the future! 📸 Some pictures attached! Aarhus BSS - Aarhus University, MAPP Centre, Department of Food Science, AU FOOD

Congratulations on this fantastic piece of work. Glad the Circul-a-bility Cost Action was helpful in putting together a comprehensive overview. COST Association - European Cooperation in Science and Technology
I am proud and exciting to announce our new review article entitled “Bioplastic packaging for fresh meat and fish: Current status and future direction on mitigating food and packaging waste”. It is published in Elsevier Trends in Food Science & Technology which is one of the premier international peer-reviewed journals. This article is the work of a large consortium of EU COST ACTION project Circul-a-bility, coming from different disciplines. As this review is clearly discussing food-package unit and not only food or package with a holistic approach including end-of-life of post-consumer packaging waste, this as a whole brings new insights. A short summary of this work: Bioplastic materials are gaining massive attention as promising biobased or biodegradable polymers to build a green and sustainable material platform with inherent advantages in the food packaging sector, however, to successfully implement large-scale transformations toward low- or zero-waste systems we jointly need to address the major technical and non-technical hurdles for implementation of bioplastic food packaging solutions within the future circular food supply chains. In this work, it is advocated that among all foods, fresh meat and fish stand out as a category well suited to an early implementation of bioplastic packaging solutions, due to the perishable nature and susceptibility to spoilage of these food products. This work uniquely provides a holistic view of food packaging and clearly demonstrates the importance of focusing on the food/package interface. 📣 Shout-out to Jéssica Santos who completed her STSM mission successfully at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences in the group of Selcuk Yildirim. ⁉ Her PhD work at Universidade de Aveiro focusses on the valorisation of potato and pine byproducts for bioplastic trays in fruit packaging. She just presented her work at the 5th Symposium on Circular Economy and Sustainability in #Greece. Circul-a-bility is all about pan-European research and we are glad that this particular STSM was such a success for all participants COST Association - European Cooperation in Science and Technology Ilke Uysal Unalan Matthijs Dekker Giancarlo Colelli Milena Corredig Elena Arranz Begonya Marcos Krisztina Rita Dörnyei Victoria Krauter Paula Ferreira Idalina Gonçalves
