He is also a fellow of Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS), an affiliate of the Pioneer Centre for AI, and a collaborator with the Wikimedia Foundation. His research blends natural language processing, AI, graph machine learning, and computational social science, focusing on improving human knowledge-seeking, bridging knowledge gaps, and promoting knowledge equity on the Web. His interactive tools have even been used by millions of Wikipedia readers and editors!     Mød Stinna Danger – Nomineret til UR & MiR Scholarship 2025 🤝 Stinna Danger er kandidatstuderende i datalogi på Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University med en passion for at anvende datalogiske teknikker i økologi og dyrelivsbeskyttelse. Hendes vej til tech-verdenen har været en blanding af matematik, kunst og en dyb interesse for naturen. "Jeg havnede på en tråd i et online forum, hvor nogen spurgte, hvordan hun kunne bruge en bachelorgrad i datalogi til at arbejde med beskyttelse af store kattedyr. Det var som en besked fra Stinna fra fremtiden!" - Stinna Danger Stinna arbejder nu på sit speciale i samarbejde med AUs Institut for Ecoscience, hvor hun undersøger brugen af AI til at overvåge biodiversitet. Gammelgaard, and Alexander Nørgaard Henriksen have, under the supervision of Diego F. Aranha, investigated how flaws in CPU microarchitecture can be exploited to steal cryptographic keys. Their paper, 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘒𝘺𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘌𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘈𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴, demonstrates how the Downfall vulnerability can be combined with a Flush+Reload attack technique to reconstruct private keys in post-quantum cryptography, highlighting the deep connection between cryptographic algorithm security and underlying hardware.   • 𝐅𝐫𝐚 𝐤𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭🎙️ Henrik Føhns foreslog, at der burde skabes et europæisk socialt medie som alternativ til fx Facebook. Vores institutleder, Kaj Grønbæk, er enig i behovet – men han peger også på nogle væsentlige udfordringer: 💡 𝐇𝐯𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭? Vi har den intellektuelle kapacitet, men ikke nok uddannede til at udføre arbejdet. Meta har omkring 25.000 software engineers og computer scientists, mens vi i hele Danmark kun har 18.000 med disse tekniske baggrunde. ⏳ 𝐇𝐯𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞? Mange undervurderer, hvor krævende det er at udvikle et globalt socialt medie. Facebook består af ca. 100 millioner linjer kode, og en dygtig programmør kan i gennemsnit skrive 25.000 linjer om året. Det kræver altså enten rigtig mange udviklere eller rigtig mange år. 💰 𝐇𝐯𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞? Vi har et urealistisk forhold til softwarepriser. Musik og streaming betaler vi gerne for, men vi forventer, at browsere, søgemaskiner og sociale medier er gratis – med vores data som betalingsmiddel.     Jeg fik pisket lidt af en storm op her på LinkedIn, da jeg støvede et gammelt forslag af og foreslog et europæisk socialt medie.  Jeg fik både rygklap og kritik. Blandt andre fra Kaj Grønbæk, som jeg tog til Aarhus for at besøge: Techtopia 360: Et farvel til Facebook kan koste kassen Debatten raser om, hvorvidt vil skal vriste os ud af de amerikanske techgiganters dominans. Er løsningen at bygge vores egne sociale medie platforme i Europa? Det kræver, at vi er realistiske omkring den nødvendige investering Og det er vi ikke altid, hævder professor Kaj Grønbæk, der er leder af Datalogi på Aarhus Universitet. Han har lavet regnestykket på, hvad det koster at bygge og drive en europæisk platform i stil med Facebook.   • 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫 👋🏻😀 We are thrilled that Daniel has chosen to stay at Aarhus University as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Logic and Semantics group! Daniel first joined us as a PhD student under Lars Birkedal, followed by a postdoc and a visiting research position at University of Oxford. His research focuses on type theory and category theory, with a particular interest in higher category theory and dependent type theory. By applying mathematical techniques to programming languages, his work aims to develop more expressive and reliable tools for both mathematicians and software engineers.   • 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐠 𝐤𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬ø𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐫 🎓🌍 Ansøgningsfristen til kandidatuddannelserne er netop passeret, og 662 har søgt ind på Datalogi og IT-Produktudvikling – heraf 508 som førsteprioritet. 📈 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞: Siden instituttet i 2017 startede en målrettet indsats for at rekruttere internationale studerende, har der hvert år været ansøgerrekord, og 2025 er ingen undtagelse. F.eks. er EU-ansøgere til Datalogi steget fra 109 i 2021 til 190 i 2025, mens non-EU-ansøgere er mere end tredoblet fra 90 til 268. 👩💻 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐯æ𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐓: Den positive udvikling gælder også kønsbalancen. Antallet af kvindelige ansøgere på Datalogi er næsten tredoblet siden 2021, og kvinder udgør næsten 28% af alle ansøgning – særligt drevet af internationale kvindelige ansøgere. Et internationalt og diversificeret studiemiljø styrker vores uddannelser, faglige miljø og forskning. Vi ser frem til at byde en masse nye talentfulde studerende velkommen!   • 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 ⌨️🤝 After multiple shoulder surgeries, programming became nearly impossible for computer science student Stine Havgaard. Faced with the difficult choice of taking a leave of absence or dropping out, she found support from her lecturer Clemens Nylandsted Klokmose, who shared her challenge with colleagues and students. This led to IT Product Development student Joakim Rosenfeldt Pedersen stepping up to build a custom one-handed keyboard for Stine - enabling her to continue her studies. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬? 🔍 Petros’ research tackles key challenges in network analysis, focusing on diffusion processes and subgraph search. His work extends classical models to better understand node selection in evolving systems and uncertain environments. Additionally, he developed methods for detecting persistently connected subgraphs in temporal networks and aligning smaller structures within larger networks. These insights contribute to a more advanced understanding of diffusion dynamics and structural detection in large-scale graphs. Good luck, Petros! His research focuses on developing noise-resilient machine learning algorithms, enabling robust AI systems for applications in cybersecurity, life sciences, and safety-critical domains. His work addresses a key challenge in machine learning: 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒆 - whether it's naturally occurring, introduced for privacy, or affecting data reliability. Andrea aims to develop efficient, practical algorithms that maintain strong statistical performance while being easy to implement in real-world applications. For Andrea, Aarhus University was an easy choice 🇩🇰 As one of the strongest departments in Europe in his field, the department offers the perfect research environment for his work in machine learning and optimization.
