𝗜𝗻 𝗦𝘁ø𝘃𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽 🍃 The heating plant installed its first large electric heat pump in 2019, but as the town and its industries have grown, so has the demand for heat. The new heat pump system consists of two H-1800 air-source CO₂ heat pumps, running mainly on surplus electricity from wind and solar. When cheap electricity is available, the heat pumps produce extra heat, which is stored in the plant’s accumulation tanks. With a second tank completed in 2024, an additional electric boiler and the increased heat pump capacity, the plant can now reduce its natural gas consumption - and CO₂ emissions. 🍃 The result? We are excited to collaborate with Caverion on several heat pump projects in Finland ♨️ Last week, we had a kick-off meeting at our factory followed by a site visit to Ry district heating where the Caverion guys got a first-hand look at a 10 MW CO2 heat pump system. Among our projects with Caverion is a combined heating and cooling heat pump that recovers waste heat from a new data center and uses it in the district heating network in the town Kajaani. When fully implemented, this system can deliver more than 30 MW heat! Another Caverion/Fenagy project is an HCI-3000 isobutane/propane heat pump for the Finnish manufacturer Chemigate. With a heating capacity of 2.2 MW and a 1.8 MW cooling capacity, this solution is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions at Chemigate’s production plant in Lapua by around 20%. Last week, we asked you how much space is needed for a 10 MW air-source heat pump ... And most of you got it right! ✅ A 10 MW air-source heat pump typically requires 1,000 m² of space. At Fenagy, we use this ratio as a solid starting point based on experience from multiple projects. It ensures a well-functioning heat pump system while balancing investment costs (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX) for a CO₂-based system. If the evaporator area is too small, defrosting will be needed more often (even at higher ambient temperatures), increasing OPEX. If the area is too large, CAPEX goes up, while OPEX decreases - but not in a straight line. Instead, the savings gradually taper off, approaching an optimal point where further increasing the area makes little difference. We are very proud to show the results of our R&D projects, carried out in collaboration with our partners and with support from EUDP. Collaboration on development is essential for products of the future ... 🌱 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗠𝗜𝗫𝟰𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 This project is complete and has laid the foundation for our success with large air-to-water heat pumps. Our focus was to develop and demonstrate new CO2-based heat pumps that are standardised, easy to install and simple to service. The result was our well-known factory-built "plug and play" solutions, which have taken the market by storm. Through this project, we also developed mechanical sub-coolers based on isobutane as a refrigerant, ejector solutions and the necessary valves. Danish Technological Institute, Danfoss, Güntner, Aarhus University, Dansk Fjernvarme, Vahterus 🌱 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗢𝟮 In this project, we are working with combined heating and cooling, where the system and components can be reversed for cooling and heating. We have also developed new, larger components such as compressors, heat exchangers, oil separators, valves and ejectors. Through this project, our solutions for data and cloud integration as well as digital twin technology have been developed. It was also in connection with this project that DTI's test laboratory for industrial heat pumps was established. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 🍃 Yesterday, Fenagy had the pleasure of hosting Ann-Sofie Gunnarsson, Head of Sustainability at our parent company, Beijer Ref. Like Fenagy, Beijer REF has high ambitions to drive the sustainability agenda in a positive direction. The day was spent discussing how Fenagy’s products and solutions can be supported by Beijer REF’s global network of colleagues, who share the ambition to accelerate the green transition. We also talked about ESG reporting, how we each approach the task and how we can leverage each other’s knowledge. Right now, Fenagy is working on our 2024 ESG report, which will include reporting on scope 1 to 3 emissions as well as quantitative estimates of the positive impact our natural refrigerant heat pumps bring to our customers, who are phasing out fossil fuels.
