ICARS pursues the achievement of its ambitious mission and vision of partnering with LMICs to mitigate AMR.
Om os
Imagine a world in which AMR no longer poses a threat to the health of humans and animals, the environment, global food security and economic prosperity. This is our vision at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions - ICARS. ICARS provides One Health intervention and implementation research support to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in their efforts to prevent and mitigate AMR. Through our activities, we enter into partnerships with LMICs to advance the implementation of their National Action Plans (NAPs). These partnerships involve projects through which we co-develop and test new solutions for AMR mitigation, translate existing evidence into action, all while supporting capacity and capability building in LMICs. Our work also extends to advocacy for the importance of Implementation Research as a means to deliver on the NAPs.

📄 Today's #MondayRead is a paper on #Vaccines & #AMR that analyses the funding landscape for human bacterial vaccines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Key findings: 💰 Funding disparity: Between 2007 and 2024, the Global North received the majority of human bacterial vaccine funding, while the Global South received less than 20% of the total. 🌎 Geographic misalignment: There is a mismatch between funding distribution and the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 📊 Data gaps: Current tracking lacks details on final funding recipients, hindering full assessment of inequities. 📉 Low domestic investment: Limited investment from LMICs further complicates efforts to address funding disparities. 🔎 Funding focus: Most funding targeted M. tuberculosis and S. pneumoniae, with critical gaps in R&D funding for WHO AMR priority pathogens. 🧫 Need for transparency: Transparent tracking, reporting, and allocation of vaccine R&D funding are essential for tackling AMR and addressing global health challenges effectively. 🌍 Bridging Policy and Action – A Post-UNGA One Health Agenda for AMR This Side Meeting, held in Bangkok during the Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) 2025, gathered regional and national experts, policymakers, civil society and other stakeholders to deliberate on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) mitigation across the Asia-Pacific region. Co-organised by The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), the AMR Multistakeholder Partnership Platform, and the IHPP, the event built on the momentum from the 2024 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR to explore actionable strategies and solutions for implementing the declaration in the region. 💡 Key discussions included: 🔹 Strengthening #OneHealth approaches for cross-sector and in-sector collaboration 🔹 Leveraging regional coordination in mitigating efforts and financing for AMR response 🔹 Generation of actionable data that informs policies and strategies 🔹 Scaling and sharing of successful AMR interventions within and to other regions 🔹 Empowering civil society organisations (CSOs) & media to raise awareness and drive action 🤝 The event served as a critical platform for cross-sector collaboration and the exchange of knowledge to drive AMR solutions in the Asia-Pacific region. 🙏 ICARS warmly thanks all the speakers, participants, and organisers for making this event a success. In the last few months, the World Health Organization and another group of researchers quantified the effect of vaccines on antimicrobial use. Both estimated the reduction in infections from (new) vaccines, and based on that the estimated reduction in antibiotic use - directly related to those prevented infections. The reductions are modest (a few percentages of all antibiotic use) since most antibiotics are not used in patients with actual bacterial infections. BUT the largest potential for improvements in antimicrobial use can not be addressed in such simulation studies: the effect on prescriber behaviour, determined by their uncertainty of the potential cause of disease. "If new Shigella, enterotoxigenic E coli, and non-Typhi Salmonella vaccines attain sufficient overall vaccine effectiveness and vaccination coverage, all bacterial pathogens that contribute most to the burden of diarrhoeal disease could be reduced, mitigating prescribers' uncertainty. Prescription protocols could also be simplified, allowing for more straightforward educational and persuasive antimicrobial stewardship interventions targeting prescribers and patients. Hence, not only antibiotic use for those bacteria-specific diarrhoeal episodes, but any antibiotic use to treat diarrhoeal episodes—nearly a quarter of all antibiotic use (135 of 577 antibiotic courses per 100 child-years)—could be avoided." -> there's a need for implementation research evaluating the combined and interacting effect of vaccination and behavioural interventions on antibiotic use, without overlooking prescribers' and patients' perceptions, uncertainty, and related behaviour. 📄 Today's #MondayRead is the World Health Organization's updated AMR resource pack, providing useful materials for the development and implementation of national action plans (NAPs) on antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). 👏 The 2025 edition organises documents around a core package of 13 people-centred interventions. 🎯 These interventions serve as a foundation for prioritising and selecting activities for NAPs, following a programmatic approach that addresses health system challenges and barriers people face in accessing care. It also considers the interdependencies between AMR interventions to ensure a comprehensive response. Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/4hxoCLO
