Zooming in on the blade upgrade potential in India after successfully upgrading 100+ turbines. Indian IPPs (Independent Power Producers) embrace innovation and are harvesting the benefits from aerodynamic blade upgrades. We have upgraded 100+ turbines with very satisfactory results improving annual energy performance significantly. The image below illustrates a power curve showing the benefit from outboard vortex generator installation in addition to existing inboard vortex generators. In the example below with heavy soiling, the customer trialed our solution and validated an increase of 4.7% average AEP increase followed by a full-site roll-out. How vortex generators (VGs) can mitigate soiling performance issues 💡 Blade soiling caused by dust and dirt buildup, can significantly impact and reduce wind turbine performance by disrupting airflow and increasing drag. Installing VGs is a strategic way to recover energy losses due to soiling. PowerCurve have a vast experience in upgrading wind turbines that suffer from soiling issues. In certain Indian regions where the dry season brings high levels of dust, we have trialed and validated AEP improvements of more than 5%. What is blade soiling and how does it impact wind turbine performance? 👀 Blade soiling refers to the buildup of dust, dirt, and other particles on wind turbine blades. As dust layers thicken it disrupts airflow, reduces aerodynamic efficiency, and increases drag, ultimately lowering the turbine's power output. Soiling can lead to significant energy production losses, especially in dusty or polluted environments. In more severe cases, soiling can alter the blade’s shape, causing aerodynamic drag and compounding energy losses. The consequence of this is a reduction in power output. At PowerCurve, we specifically observe that certain regions, particularly in India, contend with elevated levels of airborne pollutants, specifically dust and particulate matter. These contaminants adhere to turbine blades, exacerbating the adverse effects of soiling on both efficiency and overall performance.
