Famous Last Words ❗ Today we had a bit of fun with the concept known as “Planning phallacy”. The planning phallacy is the fourth of 10 behavioral bias affecting project management. This phenomenon causes project managers to make plans based on the best-case scenario. Due to this bias they tend to underestimate risks, costs and the time associated with their project. This can even occur when project managers are aware of failures and delays that occurred in earlier projects. In short, this is when project managers underestimate the resources required to fulfil the project goals. This can result in poor decision-making down the line. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 🌊 On 15 August, Crowley Wind Services broke ground on transforming a former coal and oil power plant site in Salem, Massachusetts, into the state’s second offshore wind port. The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal, expected to be operational by 2026, will support New England’s offshore wind farms and future floating turbines in the Gulf of Maine. Crowley has partnered with Massachusetts-based DW White JF White for construction, creating around 150 jobs during development and up to 150 additional roles for operations. Governor Maura Healey praised the investment, emphasizing its role in boosting the economy and supporting the region’s clean energy goals. 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌊 Menon Economics, commissioned by Offshore Norway, has published a report highlighting future cost reductions in offshore wind, especially for floating offshore wind. Roger Pedersen, Director of Offshore Wind at Offshore Norway, notes, “We can expect significant cost reductions in the coming decades,” though support is needed to scale projects like Utsira Nord. Arvid Nesse, manager of METCentre, adds, “Norway’s developers and supply chain will play a key role in driving costs down.” Despite recent challenges, the report reaffirms offshore wind’s critical role in the green transition. Famous Last Words ❗ Today we had a bit of fun with the concept known as “Uniqueness bias”. Uniqueness bias is the third of 10 behavioral bias affecting project management. Uniqueness bias refers to the cognitive phenomenon, where individuals perceive their qualities and personal attributes as unique, when they really are not. This bias stems from a desire for positive self-evaluation. When project managers are affected by this bias, they tend to overlook valuable information found in past projects and may miss out on valuable lessons learned. It can also lead to risks being underestimated and ultimately cause risks to not be managed correctly. Project management tip of the day ⭐: One way to counteract uniqueness bias is to use the outside-view. Outside-view refers to looking at your own project through the lenses of past completed projects that are similar. Luxcara secured 1.5 GW, while RWE won 4 GW. Despite the scale, industry concerns have emerged due to limited bids and a lack of transparency. Only five bids were submitted, raising questions about investor interest.
