The state of Mass. is going all in on wind power with this Salem project but the big question is: what's going to happen with the next RFP for offshore wind contracts? Vineyard Wind is under construction but two other wind farms for Mass. (not to mention many others along the East Coast) have been shelved because of higher interest rates and supply costs. Massachusetts is taking an interesting approach by teaming up with Connecticut and Rhode Island on the next wave of wind farm development but will it be enough to secure properly competitive bids?
#Salem is a port city that is no stranger to making history. And with today’s historic offshore wind agreement, it will help lead us to a clean energy future. MassCEC today announced its purchase of more than 42 acres of land on Salem Harbor to advance the second offshore wind port in #Massachusetts. The Salem Offshore Wind Terminal, which will be redeveloped and managed by Crowley, will support the construction of offshore wind farms in Massachusetts and floating offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine. This public-private partnership with the City of Salem, Massachusetts and Crowley will accelerate our transition to clean energy, create good jobs and spur economic development for the North Shore region and all of Massachusetts. As offshore wind establishes itself in America, so too do local supply chains. This new network of companies has come together to engineer, manufacture, and construct turbines in the ocean and deliver clean, renewable power to our country’s grid. Keeping that supply chain humming are hardworking people across the country — from mountain towns in the heartland to coastal communities and big cities — who are helping the offshore wind industry turn America’s "rust belt" into a "green belt." As new projects take shape, these networks shift in response. Take local Tier 1 supplier for secondary steel, Riggs Distler, which has stood up operations in both Rhode Island and New York, moving with the industry and serving as the nexus between suppliers and developers like Ørsted. Watch our video and read more (link below) about how the offshore wind supply chain of the great state of New York is alive and at work helping to strengthen American manufacturing. https://lnkd.in/gHvew7-8 #OSWatWork #Offshorejobs #offshorewind #cleanenergy #manufacturing #NewYork

AUSTRALIA GRANTS LICENCES FOR SIX OFFSHORE WIND FARMS Australia's federal government has granted feasibility licences to six offshore wind farm projects in the Gippsland region of Victoria. The licences will allow developers to conduct environmental and geotechnical surveys in the designated wind farm zone, paving the way for their construction. The successful projects, including proposals from companies such as Ørsted and Iberdrola, have the potential to deliver 25 GW of generation capacity - exceeding Victoria's current capacity and will compensate for the country's phase-out of coal-fired power. The wind farms are expected to create 15,000 jobs during construction and 7,500 permanent positions thereafter. This aligns with Victoria's ambitious targets for offshore wind, aiming for at least 2 GW by 2032 and 9 GW by 2040. Australia's Climate Change and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, hailed the milestone, stating that the new clean energy industry will deliver reliable renewables and secure jobs for the Gippsland region. ⚡ Follow MPS (Modern Power Systems) for all the latest news daily from the global power generation industry ⚡ #MPS #power #energy #powergeneration #windenergy #renewableenergy

Fisher Designated Professor @ Ohio State | Supply Chain Transformation, Author - The Electric Vehicle Revolution: Five Visionaries Leading the Charge (Rowman & Littlefield)
A big step in the #EnergyTransition The South Shore Wind Farm off Block Island is generating 💥 To achieve this requires huge #SupplyNetworkTransformation The assembly line for South Fork begins miles away from the offshore site, at the State Pier in New London, Conn. The project — which is a joint venture between Eversource, a New England utility, and Orsted, a Danish company — has been a global operation. The biggest components, including turbine blades as long as a football field, are manufactured in Europe, where offshore wind farms are more prevalent. #WillingnessToCommit This has been in the works for twenty years…. But we need streamlining of laws and regulations to mitigate NIMBYism And #AbilityToProfit Developers and markets need strong, consistent signals on revenue flows Good to see #GearsOfChange turning Story here https://lnkd.in/ecREZ-MT By Patrick McGeehan and Joe Buglewicz

New South Wales (NSW) faces significantly higher costs for offshore wind projects compared to Victoria, mainly due to geographical and infrastructural differences. The deep waters off NSW necessitate expensive engineering solutions, while Victoria's Gippsland region benefits from shallower waters that simplify turbine installation. Victoria's advanced infrastructure and expertise in offshore wind further reduce costs. In contrast, NSW must invest in new transmission lines to connect to the power grid, driving up expenses. Additionally, community opposition and unclear government support in NSW heighten project risks, whereas Victoria's more supportive environment helps mitigate costs. https://lnkd.in/g4rmbdEy
