Innovation for adolescent and youth wellbeing| Infrastructure for meaningful participation and leadership of young people| MHPSS and Youth Advisor, MHPSS Collaborative|

Excited to be and speak at the #WorldHealthSummit, wrapping up today, in a workshop organized by Google and YouTube on Accessible Support in Mental Health: Empowering Communities Worldwide Through Digital Content and Tools 🌍🧠. During my intervention, I reflected on my journey in global and public health—particularly in pioneering the use of digital tools in spaces where they weren’t common, but where young people were eager to engage. It was a pleasure to share insights into how we made it work and how these experiences have shaped my current research and advocacy on what counts as evidence, who it serves, and why lived experience-informed knowledge is inevitable if you truly want to make sustainable change happen. We also emphasised on the crucial role of meaningful youth and community participation in ensuring that mental health tools are fit for purpose 🔑. It’s always inspiring to see how digital platforms can be a catalyst for change when communities and young people are truly and meaningfully involved. While there can be some fatigue around traditional events like this, it’s discussions like these that remind me why they still matter—and why at the The MHPSS Collaborative, we’re still exploring innovative ways to convene for action ⚡️. If you’re interested in innovating for children and young people’s wellbeing, catalyzing early stage solutions, facilitating community and youth led action, and questioning our assumptions about the current knowledge ecosystem, I’m interested to connect and exchange ideas! 💬 Thank you for having me Götz "GG" Gottschalk, MBA and a privilege to share space with Marjorie Morrison Megan Jones Bell Jörg M. Fegert Orkan Okan. #MentalHealth #DigitalInnovation #YouthEngagement #EvidenceForAction #GlobalHealth #PublicHealth #MHPSS

  • “This is the first time in thirty years of teaching that I have been in front of professionals interested in the mental health of us teachers.” - Teacher from Arauca, Colombia (MHPSS in Action)   📢 Teachers play a critical role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their students, particularly in crisis. 🌏 On this #WorldMentalHealthDay we want to highlight the fact that the mental health and wellbeing of teachers themselves is often overlooked.   Our recent initiatives Thriving through Play (in collaboration with The LEGO Foundation) and MHPSS in Action (in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council, Amal Alliance, and supported by Porticus) - emphasize the urgent need to equip teachers with the right tools and strategies to protect their well-being and enable them to support their students. The video linked below provides a glimpse into the realities faced by teachers in Ukraine, Colombia, and Kenya, and highlights the critical need for intervention. 📝 With the support of The LEGO Foundation, The MHPSS Collaborative will soon launch an evaluation of Thriving through Play to better understand its impact and measure the effectiveness of integrating play-based MHPSS approaches in Ukrainian schools. 📝 You can read all reports and learning briefs from the MHPSS in Action research in Colombia, Greece and Kenya here: https://lnkd.in/eq74cAeM #worldmentalhealthday #educationinemergencies #crisis

By 2030, mental health costs associated with climate and environmental change are projected to reach $47 billion annually and will continue to grow exponentially, adding substantially to already high global mental health burden and associated costs. Climate change significantly impacts children and youth's mental health and that of the adults in their lives, causing distress, new challenges and exacerbating existing conditions. Yesterday, our Director attended a critical high-level policy dialogue on mental health in Brussles, co-hosted by the Hungarian EU Presidency and WHO Europe, in response to the Triple Planetary Crisis: climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss. We were pleased to hear several of the MHPSS Collaborative's 4 key messages reflected in the conversations: 1️⃣ Prioritize both climate change mitigation and adaptation to protect child and youth mental health in the present and prevent adverse impacts in the future 2️⃣ Address the mental health and climate change funding gaps for both research and action 3️⃣ Apply a 'whole-child', 'whole of society' and cross-sectoral approach 4️⃣ Facilitate meaningful youth participation in policy development and programme design I especially appreciated the key note addresses of Wietse Tol and Alessandro Massazza (member of our Advisory Group), and panelist interventions by Ledia Lazeri and Julia Stewart-David

Together with The LEGO Foundation, we are excited to present the webinar 'Thriving through play: A mental health and psychosocial support classroom approach for educators in crisis-affected settings' with esteemed speakers Paul St John Frisoli, Rena Deitz, Oksana Roma and Ashley Nemiro, PhD. 📅 October 8, 2024 ⏱ 16:00 CET 🖊 Register here: https://lnkd.in/djVKTWjy 🔸 The war in Ukraine has caused widespread death, destruction, and displacement - forcing millions of children and families to flee their homes in search of safety. 🔸 This has a devastating impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children. In times of crisis, teachers play a vital role in supporting the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of students. 🔸 The LEGO Foundation and the MHPSS Collaborative developed and conducted an online training on play-based mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for teacher training institutions in Ukraine between September 2022 and April 2023. 🔸 So far, over 3,000 preschool and primary school teachers in Ukraine have undertaken the training,120 instructors have been trained to deliver the course and we are already exploring further translations of the material. This webinar will give an overview of the project, the power of play and prioritizing wellbeing in the classroom in a crisis setting. • We are horrified by the escalation of conflict in Palestine, Lebanon and Yemen. For the past year, millions of children in the Middle East have lived with the direct impact of war or with an ever-looming threat of war. Tens of thousands of children have lost their lives or loved ones. Millions are displaced and out of school with limited access to healthcare, food or safe drinking water. In war and conflict, children pay the highest price. Without immediate and concerted efforts to address the escalating crisis, more children and families will face profound hardship, loss and disruption that will have lasting consequences on their mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. The international community must act now to prevent the further devastation of children and their families, who have already endured unimaginable loss and horror. We call on all parties to de-escalate hostilities immediately and make all possible efforts to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and support.
