Innovations Towards a Zero Food Waste Supply Chain.

While one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year, the ZeroW project is launching to help the transition of current food systems towards halving Food Loss & Waste (FLW) by 2030 and reaching a near-zero level by 2050. The project is funded by The European Union under Grant Agreement no. 101036388. ZeroW is driving innovations for zero food waste by: - Developing data-driven applications to reduce Food Loss & Waste throughout the supply chain from pre-harvest, production, processing, wholesale & retail to consumption. - Creating systemic innovation through 9 living labs across the EU. - Making policy recommendations for the EU.

One of their products is an umami mushroom sauce, perfect for adding flavor to vegetarian dishes. The sauce is made from mushrooms from a sustainable Danish farm.     Food waste is a significant global challenge, with approximately 30% of all produced food going to waste, despite ongoing hunger issues. Although efforts have led to a decline in food waste in the European Union, this reduction has recently plateaued. Notably, food loss occurring on and near farms is higher than estimated. ZeroW project partners participated in the first international conference on reducing food waste ‘Towards halving Foodwaste by 2030’ by contributing to the Policy and Legislation break out session. Sharing the challenges faced by the ZeroW SILL 4 pilot, with an audience of European and local policymakers, was the ideal way to stimulate knowledge exchange and policy change. 👉Read more: https://lnkd.in/d-xDw75g #foodwaste #food #zerowaste #ZeroW

    We are excited to announce that Digiotouch, a key partner in the EU-funded ZeroW project, participated in the second edition of the OSPOs for Good symposium at the United Nations HQ in New York. This symposium served as a high-level platform to introduce open source within the UN system, featuring thematic tracks on open source policy and showcasing global examples of ‘open source for good’. It prominently highlighted the theme of ‘open source networks as enablers of global cooperation’, which is foundational in collaborative EU-funded R&D projects.     It was a pleasant surprise to be invited by the United Nations HQ to the second edition of the OSPOs for Good symposium in New York. This action symposium aims to serve as a high-level coming out party for open source in the UN system, delivering high-level thematic tracks that address key areas of open source policy, as well as highlighting emerging examples of ‘open source for good’ from across the globe. It will prominently highlight the theme of ‘open source networks as enablers of global cooperation’ which is already a foundational block in collaborative EU-funded R&D projects. Check out Living Lab #9 by ZeroW! 🧐 This project is addressing the lack of consumer engagement in reducing food loss and waste, tackling the obstacles of awareness and consumer habits. By capturing data on existing consumer patterns and using mathematical modeling, partners such as Netherlands Nutrition Centre Foundation, Tilburg University, and Wageningen University will create alternative recipes that have the same nutritional value but create less food waste. 🍲👩🍳 The project will also create labels for transparent purchasing, informing consumers of how much food was lost for a product to be produced.
