Sunday 29 September will again be the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (FLW) - let us know today how we can support you in the fight of FLW! The EU-funded CHORIZOproject explores the role of social norms in food loss and waste (#FLW) generation. #socialnorms are socially enforced rules and expectations that for example lead to people tending to prepare too much food for a gathering, or feeling embarrassed to take a ‘doggy bag’ of leftover food home from a restaurant. In the project we have have explored the roles of social norms and want to share our learnings. Today we want to learn how to best tailor the project outputs to your needs! On 16 September 2024, together with my colleagues from the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences - University of Bologna, we took part in the presentation of the International Waste Watcher report on food waste in the G7 countries in Rome. In the afternoon session, my colleagues and I presented several European projects on the topic of food loss and waste in which our research group is involved. Specifically, I had the pleasure of presenting the Horizon Europe BREADCRUMB project, which aims to investigate the nature of private and public food marketing standards and to study their connection with the generation of food waste. The activities focus on five food supply chains (fruit and vegetables, cereals, meat, eggs, fish) in order to exploit the evidence-based results to develop strategies to increase the commercial value of sub-optimal products, i.e. those that do not meet marketing standards but have qualitative and nutritional characteristics suitable for consumption.  My colleagues Filippo Pini and Andrea Nozzoli presented the Horizon Europe projects CHORIZOproject and FOLOU project, and Irene Bedosti (She/Her) spoke about the Interreg Europe project #foodCIRCUS. Hacia el #DesperdicioCero : así avanza el proyecto CHORIZOproject, financiado por el programa #HorizonEU, que estudia cómo las normas sociales, las prácticas empresariales y el comportamiento del consumidor impactan en el volumen de comida desperdiciada. 🔬 Irene González Pérez, investigadora del departamento de I+D+i de CNTA, participó ayer en la reunión del grupo de trabajo "Consumidor y Nuevos Productos", organizado por la Plataforma Tecnológica Food for Life-Spain (PTF4LS) (#PTF4LS), en la que habló sobre los avances de los grupos de estudio sobre el comportamiento del consumidor, la fecha de caducidad y el envasado inteligente, que CNTA lidera en colaboración con FIAB.   Durante su intervención nos ha contado cómo utilizando metodologías como las encuestas online o las entrevistas en profundidad, tanto a consumidores como a empresas, han detectado que: 👉🏻 La confusión con las fechas de caducidad y una mala planificación de las comidas aumentan el desperdicio ♻️ La industria debe innovar en envases sostenibles que también sirvan para comunicar información útil y recomendaciones al consumidor 🗣 La aceptación de los nuevos envases inteligentes dependerá de una buena comunicación con los consumidores El proyecto seguirá desarrollándose hasta 2025 para crear nuevas herramientas que nos acerquen al objetivo de #ZeroFoodWaste #ConCienciaSíHayFuturo

Let’s reduce consumer food waste! Solutions from the European Consumer Food Waste Forum Our partners ILVO (Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek), Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP), ICLEI, University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) and University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) were part of the panel discussions about different topics such as: “Reducing #consumer #foodwaste: challenges and opportunities”; “Designing, monitoring and evaluating your consumer food waste prevention action”; “Actions to reduce consumer food waste by #policymakers, with a focus on #cities and #regions”; “Actions to reduce consumer food waste in #schools and #universities”, and had the opportunity to foster the results and aims of the #CHORIZOproject. A week ago, but still fresh on my mind! Together with more than 150 present and 300 online passionists we put the spotlight on consumer #foodwaste. What I would like to share with you here: - A systemic approach is needed: all food value chain actors can support consumers reducing food waste at home, by taking leadership and responsibility beyond own operations. - Great insights into how to design, monitor and evaluate consumer food waste prevention intervention exist already: Build your intervention on the lessons learnt (see for example the ECFWF compendium and toolbox https://lnkd.in/dSMHuTqF) and share your results with others, to further accelerate the change.
