The African Energy Commission (AFREC) is a specialised energy agency of the African Union (AU), in charge of coordinating, harmonising, protecting, conserving, rational exploitation, commercialising and integrating energy resources on the African continent. Member States, continental and regional African institutions and international organisations use the energy statistic datasets as their main source to plan and inform decisions on energy development, production and supply on the continent. Up to 2018 AFREC has been focusing mainly on the collection of energy statistics through dedicated National Focal Points (NFP) who are appointed by the Ministers responsible for energy from all 55 AU Member States. As part of its mandate, AFREC is working closely with development partners and AU agencies on the continent and abroad, to ensure an effective continental energy information system is developed, integration of energy resources, strengthening national energy information systems and developing a comprehensive continental energy action programme for the development of the whole Africa's energy sector and in response to Africa's Agenda 2063, in realisation of delivering 'The Africa We Want' and the SDGs is achieved. AFREC welcomes all development partners who wish to collaborate on feasibility research/studies in 5 African Regions namely: Southern, Eastern, Western, Central and Northern in: Renewable energy in general, Bio-energy, Oil and Gas, Energy Efficiency, Energy Transition and the Africa Energy Information System. We work with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Africa Regional Power Pools who are responsible for accelerating energy development at regional level for regional integration purposes, resources sharing and development of regional energy sector, in view of achieving continental energy efficiency and sustainable development.

Continental Webinar on Energy Efficiency Improvements – Appliances’ Market Transformation Opportunities in Africa>> Electric appliances consume a significant amount of electricity in Africa. With the projected doubling of Africa’s population by 2050, electricity consumption and associated emissions – driven by urbanization, electrification and enhanced livelihoods, the number of appliances- are expected to grow significantly. Therefore, African countries need to prioritize energy efficiency measures as part of the sustainable development agenda and net zero emission targets. Against this background, AFREC, U4E and Regional Centers for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency are hosting a virtual webinar to demonstrate the expected energy savings potential for appliances market transformation targeting common electricity end uses - lighting, cooling appliances (refrigerators and room air conditioners), electric motors and power distribution transformers. This includes potential energy savings, electricity cost reduction for the people and environmental impacts reduction across the five regions -Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central Africa based on scenarios consistent with adoption of U4E’s Model Regulation Guidelines. Registration: https://lnkd.in/dMZKxaAu Date: 30 October 2024 Time:1300 – 1500 hours (CAT); 1200 – 1400 hours (Algiers); 1100 – 1300 hours (GMT) 1000 – 1200 (Praia)

Do not miss out on the opportunity to engage on the status of Clean Cooking in Africa, the annual cost of inaction to Africa, case studies on best practices of addressing the challenge. The virtual session shall bring together clean cooking stakeholders from across the Africa and beyond to raise awareness on the clean cooking challenge in the continent, and using case studies provide practical recommendations on how to address the challenge. The recommendations are part of the “Sustainable Scaling: Meeting the Clean Cooking Challenge in Africa” report prepared through a partnership between AFREC, the Modern Clean Cooking Services (MECS) and the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank. The report is to be launched during COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. #MECS (MECS Programme) #WorldResourcesInstitute (https://lnkd.in/dHtYZ23s) #EastAfricanCentreOfExcellenceForRenewableEnergyAndEfficiency (https://lnkd.in/dSht-Bpj) #ecowascentreforrenewableEnergyAndEnergyEfficiency (https://lnkd.in/dqRhRhVd /) #CleanCookingAlliance (https://lnkd.in/dcEBjm8H)

🌍 AFREC Successfully Holds First In-Person Methane Mitigation Training for Algerian Oil and Gas Experts The African Energy Commission (AFREC) has successfully completed its first-ever in-person methane mitigation training for Algeria’s oil and gas sector experts! The event took place from 23 to 25 September 2024 at the Sonatrach Training Institute in Boumerdes, Algeria. 👷♂️👩🔬 Thirty-five participants, including engineers and scientists from Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, gathered to learn essential skills to detect, measure, and mitigate methane emissions across the oil and gas value chain. Methane is responsible for at least 30% of the current rise in global temperatures, making this training timely and vital for Algeria, a leading oil and gas producer. 📡 The training also explored cutting-edge tools such as satellite technology for methane detection and advanced mitigation strategies. Participants received certificates recognizing their achievements. We extend our gratitude to the dignitaries from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Sonatrach Training Institute, UNEP, and Carbon Limits for their collaboration in making this training a success. AFREC remains committed to supporting AU Member States in decarbonizing the oil and gas sector for a sustainable future. For more information, contact AFREC at afrec@africa-union.org.
