Finally I find some time to reflect on the FOSS4G Europe 2024 conference that I attended last week in Tartu, Estonia together with other 450 people passionate about #opensource #geospatial software. 🌐 #FOSS4G conferences have always been among my favourite ones! The one in Tartu has been my 10th international (global or European) FOSS4G attended - the first one was back in 2011! 🖥 As always, the three main conference days were packed with parallel tracks showcasing the maturity of the open source geospatial ecosystem: new technological advances, scientific applications, policy support and implementation of standards (OGC APIs from The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and STAC were by far the most mentioned). Great keynotes from Athina Trakas, Jaak Laineste, Stefanie Lumnitz and Jakub Nowosad reminded the underlying values and needs of open source: transparency, collaboration, open mindset, governance, community management, communication and outreach, etc. 📑 All presentations are available from the conference program (https://lnkd.in/dp6UjeZf) and all recordings are already online (https://lnkd.in/d2qm4fWZ). 🔹 I co-organised the European Track 🇪🇺 happened on July 4 and dedicated to European applications of FOSS4G and discussions on relevant EU policies and initiatives. I also co-organised the Academic Track 🎓 together with Evelyn Uuemaa and Marco Ciolli, selecting the 21 contributions presented at the conference and the corresponding papers published in the ISPRS Archives (https://lnkd.in/dXmzETKu). 🔹 I gave two presentations: a Python-based analysis of non-governmental open building datasets performed with Sara Thabit and Lorenzo Gabrielli (slides: https://lnkd.in/dhdp-ARM, paper: https://lnkd.in/dbwrTpda), and a procedure using Large Language Models to extract insights from the European database of public procurements (slides: https://lnkd.in/d23tizc7) developed with Lorenzo Gabrielli and Alexander Kotsev. If you are interested in any of them, happy to talk! 👥 As always, a beautiful part of the conference has been the community! In addition to many old colleagues and friends, it was great to meet and exchange ideas with so many new and enthusiastic people that I’m sure will give a lot to geospatial open source in the years to come. 🇪🇪 Last but not least, big kudos to the sponsors and to the Local Organising Team: Tõnis Kärdi, Merli Ilves, Evelyn Uuemaa, Alexander Kmoch, all their colleagues and the volunteers working behind the scenes for putting together a great event! 📸 credits: Andres Tennus

Just got back from an incredible week at the FOSS4G Europe 2024 conference in Tartu! 🇪🇪 In this context, I had the opportunity to present in Day 2 of the academic track, sharing the work my team at LabMGF - Laboratory of Geodetic and Photogrammetric Measurements has done in creating a summer school #innovativeteaching program based on #opendata, resources, and #FOSS4G tools. 🧰 📜 The conference proceeding for "Bridging geomatics theory to real-world applications in alpine surveys through an innovative summer school teaching program" is now available on the ISPRS Archives: https://lnkd.in/d5erU7hv Special thanks to my co-authors Francesco Ioli, Federico Barbieri, Samuele Bonora, Rebecca Fascia, Livio Pinto, and Federica Migliaccio. 📹 Presentation materials and video recording are available on the official website: https://lnkd.in/dfmcaPr7 The open source geospatial community never ceases to surprise and engage: at this latest conference, as always, it was inspiring to see the passion and dedication in everyone's presentations! As the new edition of the #BelvedereGlacier Summer School approaches and its structure is a constant work in progress, we're currently studying and evaluating the adoption of some of the promising new tools and platforms presented at this year's FOSS4GE. The experience was not only professionally rewarding but also personally enriching. Tartu is a beautiful city, and I cherished every moment spent exploring it and Estonia for the first time. Moreover, connecting with colleagues, meeting old friends finally in person, making new friends, and building valuable connections made this conference truly memorable. Last but not the least, a big "aitäh" to the local organising committee from the University of Tartu for making possible such an enriching and welcoming experience!

DuckDB at FOSS4G Europe I should consider not spinning a postgres every time I need to work with some data. #foss4ge #geospatial
