Job Opportunity: Engineering Manager role at Meta working on Open Mapping. Meta is hiring for a key engineering manager role to support their Maps Foundations team. That's the team that was a huge part of getting Overture Maps Foundation started. I forgot to crow about this yesterday, but it's now been 10 years and one day since we announced Landsat on AWS! I remember very clearly the moment we pushed the website live. We worked really hard to figure out a way to make Landsat easier to access and use, and I think it's fair to say that we got a few things right. I've felt like the dog that caught the car ever since. Too many people to shout out for this, but I'll always be grateful to Chris Holmes for pushing me to make this happen basically as soon as I started at AWS. 10 years on, I can say that the real treasure is the friends we made along the way. We're just under 6 weeks away from Cloud-Native Geospatial Forum (CNG) Conference where we'll continue to work on making data about our world easier to access and use, along with people from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), The New York Times, Taylor Geospatial Engine, NVIDIA, Wherobots, Earthmover, Fused, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Ai2, Overture Maps Foundation, OGC, and Planet. We live in a golden age.

Is Cloud-Native Geospatial Forum (CNG) tech mature enough to handle massive geospatial datasets? My friend George Ioannou and I had this discussion about 45 million ground motion data points from 2019 to 2023, and I got super excited to test it out! 🚀 We downloaded the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) data of whole Cyprus from Copernicus as CSVs ZIPPED files, processed it into Parquet and Protomaps PMTiles, and now you can query the Parquet files using DuckDB-WASM, all in your browser! This means seamless visualization and analysis through kepler.gl without heavy infrastructure.
