The Carola Bridge collapse in Dresden underscores the urgent need for advanced infrastructure monitoring and maintenance. 💥 When faced with such a catastrophic event, bridge owners face a dilemma: demolish and rebuild, or renovate and replace? While the former is costly and time-consuming, the latter requires a deep understanding of the status of bridge's internal structure. 🏗 GScan's #muonFLUX muon tomography technology offers a solution. As the only technology capable of 3D imaging and assessing metres deep, dense materials, it provides invaluable insights into post-tensioned cables, rebars, and other critical components. 🔬 Last year, we successfully completed our first bridge-related field project in the UK, collaborating with National Highways, AtkinsRealis, and Jacobs. We're excited to continue this momentum and announce more projects soon. 🚀 Hope that our tech can also help to rebuild Carola Bridge in Dresdern! 🏗 #DresdenBridge #DresdenBridgeCollapse #Carolabrücke #nonDestructiveTesting #muonTomography

One byproduct of the invasion of Ukraine (on Estonian's Independence Day Feb 24th) is the changing mindset and growth of Dual Use startups, investments, and funds. Thought provoking panels today on Dual Use today - thanks Benedikt von Schoeler, Nela B., Sandra Golbreich, Valentin Menedetter, Viktorija Trimbel, Henri Kivioja, Kadri Tammoja. Marek Helm shared the dual use projects we at GScan are already delivering and the significant potential our technology - MuonFlux - have in the area.  Marek noted, “There is a gap we need to fill between capabilities, needs, and applications - what can we do now vs 5 or 10 years from now. Cooperation between startup leaders and defense leaders needs to be closer and start now so that it’s ready when we need it.”

Yesterday's Carola bridge collapse in Dresden serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure monitoring, inspection and optimal maintainance. But a collapse of bridge is just a tip of iceberg. It automatically means that under water there are a hidden mountain of problems. Some hard facts from the public sources: 👉 5,000 bridges of Germany autobahns are so decrepit that they need to be renovated or rebuilt as quickly as possible. 👉 Over 12,000 bridges across federal roads, railways, and waterways are in need of repair. 👉 55% of all road bridge structures were built before 1985 (mostly between 1960 and 1985) 👉 9,000+ of the railway bridges in the federal rail network are more than 100 years old, with an average age of around 57 years. 👉 According to bridge expert, all bridges before 1980 are problem patients - being built prioritizing saving the material and modern calculation parameters not in place. 👉 Just a reminder: German bridges generally exceed international average for maintenance. Investing in the monitoring and regular inspection of structures will not only prevent future disasters but also improve safety, efficiency, and economic growth. The #NonDestructiveTesting technologies and especially muon tomography has its important role here. #DresdenBridge #DresdenBridgeCollapse #Carolabrücke #nonDestructiveTesting #muonTomography

DRESDEN, GERMANY, TODAY Today's Dresden bridge collapse serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure resilience. While the recent incident thankfully resulted in no injuries, it underscores the potential for catastrophic failures in our ageing infrastructure. As we grapple with the reality of numerous substandard bridges worldwide, it's imperative to understand the root causes. While natural disasters and accidental impacts play a role, proactive measures like improved asset management, data-driven insights, and innovative technologies are crucial to preventing such tragedies. The Dresden collapse is still being investigated, but the press are suggesting it might be due to corrosion in the steel post-tensioning cables deep inside the concrete that makes it difficult to measure. This type of corrosion is often sped up by chloride salt. GScan, a cutting-edge technology harnessing harmless cosmic radiation, offers a promising solution to find the corroded steel elements buried deep inside concrete. By providing detailed bridge assessments, GScan empowers us to make informed decisions about maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, ensuring the safety and longevity of our infrastructure. Prioritising bridge repairs is a complex task that requires a strategic approach. By combining regular inspections, risk-based prioritisation, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making, we can allocate resources effectively and prevent future failures. Let's work together to build a safer and more resilient infrastructure. #infrastructure #safety #innovation #muonFLUX #GScan

We must shift our approach to critical infrastructure. It demands greater attention and optimised maintenance. To develop effective maintenance plans, we need high-quality data from the depths of these structures. This is where GScan’s #muonFLUX technology can make a significant contribution. #infrastructures #bridges #collapse #muonTomography

I can only agree with Darren Orf at PM. Urgent action is needed! Our infrastructure is deteriorating at an alarming rate. One of the major challenges with large critical structures like bridges is our inability to accurately assess their internal condition. How much corrosion has occurred in the steel elements embedded in concrete? Are there any defects in the concrete itself? If we do not have the accurate information it is impossible to make an optimal maintenance decision. It is as simple as that! While technologies like ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasound can provide some insights into the structures, they have limitations, particularly in detecting chemical changes and reaching deeper areas of concrete. I know that muon tomography offers a solution to these challenges. It enables us to create detailed 3D maps of deep concrete structures, allowing us to identify chemical changes like corrosion and physical changes like crack networks. At GScan, we have demonstrated the impressive capabilities of our first-generation systems, but I know this is just the beginning! #gscan #muonTomography #muonFLUX #bridges
