What sized creators are open to gifting? The answer is: Everyone loves free stuff! The more nuanced answer: it depends on your approach to gifting because *ahem* nothing is free. 🎁 Typically, when you offer a gift with no strings attached, you’ll get more yesses overall, even from influencers with 6 to 7-figure follower counts. But only about 1 in 20 will actually post about your gift. ON THE OTHER HAND 🫱🫲If you’re doing barter deals, those bigger accounts will more than likely say, “Nope, you gotta pay me, buddy!” So, you’re more likely to get yesses from smaller-sized influencers. Think 10k followers or less. But almost all of those influencers will post. What’s the takeaway? Ideally, you want to put your hands together and take both gifting approaches. No strings attached with those larger accounts you’d love to work with. Barter deals with smaller accounts to get content rolling in. If you can’t do both, choose the approach that makes the most sense for your goals. Is it more important to start new relationships? Go with no strings attached. Is it more important to get content out quickly? Go with barter deals.

One way to get a lot of (negative) attention on your brand is to send an influencer a gift and then berate them for not posting about it.  Reminder 👇 A gift is a gift. There are no posting requirements.  A free product in exchange for deliverables is a barter. Let's not confuse the two.

Is influencer gifting actually worth it? 🤔 Survey said: A resounding yes! 🎁 We polled influencer marketers, and 90% said they were already doing gifting initiatives. (The other 10% said they were starting a gifting program soon) Plus, 80% said they were ROI-positive for their brands – with the remaining 20% of marketers saying they weren’t just yet, but they believed they would be soon. What could you be doing differently in your influencer briefs? A few ideas 💡 1 - Remove unnecessary info  If you’ve ever said, “Influencers don’t read,” one reason could be that your briefs are too long or say too much. 2 - Reformat your brief Can you turn a paragraph into bullet points? Can you merge two slides into one by removing unnecessary info? Could an image work better than words? 3 - Axe your scripts  Don’t make influencers read a script. They’re uncomfortable, and so is the audience. Instead, give them some direction or a prompt and let them use their own words. 4 - Change your briefs Don’t use the same template for every single campaign. Instead, adjust your brief to fit the campaign. 5 - Test your briefs Are posts performing poorly? Are influencers confused about what you want? Are content approvals taking forever? Try changing your brief and seeing if anything improves. Your turn! Let’s learn from each other. What did you change in your briefs that made a difference?

Helping B2C brands get better at influencer marketing

Sending free product to influencers with no strings attached (seeding) isn't always best. And, barter deals (product in exchange for deliverables) isn't either. They're slightly different, and each approach can be used to support different goals. Many brands do both simultaneously. Clarify the goal first, then pick the right approach. Do you need a consistent flow of new content for paid/organic social? Are you looking to find perfect-fit long-term partnerships? Just anything to drive immediate sales? Here's some of the core differences: 1. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 & 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 If you need content to start going live fast, you need some barter deals in the mix. A no-strings offer means exactly that. There can't be any deadlines, and you can't rush people. Things are naturally going to move slower, *but* it might lead to your best long-term partnerships, if you can afford to take your time. 2. 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 "𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞" If you're asking for specific deliverables in exchange for a free product, you're best sticking to relatively small audience sizes. Nano influencers, probably <10k followers. Much bigger, it's harder to get a "yes". With a no-strings attached offer, you can go wild. Focus on just finding people who you think will love the product, even if they have 6-7 figure follower counts. Yes, acceptance rates will be much lower... But if 1 in 20 accept & post (simply because they truly love it), you can get outsized returns. And in those cases, you *know* that they authentically love it, and you can double-down in confidence with a paid partnership. 3. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 & 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 This one is very simple: Without mandatory deliverables, more people will accept your invitation to receive & try the product. With mandatory deliverables, fewer people will accept the offer, but almost all will post. One or two might ghost or have logistical issues, but most will post. 4. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐮𝐭 With no-strings attached seeding, you've got no input. So if the influencer does post, you know it's authentic. Whatever they felt like posting. The downside there is that they might not tell you they've posted, or tag you, which makes tracking a little harder. With barter deals, you can add a brief and offer some input. That's a good thing, especially for short-term goals. A little constructive guidance from you as the marketer, without scripting, can help both parties achieve their goals. And you can request tags or mandatory hashtags for tracking. ----- I'm curious to hear from brands: do you run both of these approaches simultaneously? Or if not, which one do you do & why? 🙂 #influencermarketing #influencergifting

If you’re doing influencer marketing right, you WILL get it wrong. • Most initial influencers you work with won’t bring in revenue. → But you’ll find 1-2 that do. As you run more campaigns, you’ll sometimes fail and sometimes find a handful of creators who perform really well for your brand. • You’ll get ghosted so often that you seriously consider becoming a GhostBuster, with your very one proton pack and everything. 👻 🔫 → You’ll learn that this is what happens, and never put all your eggs in a single bucket.  • A campaign will flop because you bet on the wrong niche. → You’ll learn something you didn’t know before and apply it the next time you’re recruiting. • You’ll choose influencers in a narrow niche and quickly realize it isn’t scalable. → You’ll start to think more creatively and venture outside of your product category. • You’ll collect and save influencer content by taking screenshots, and asking for analytics from creators. You will now live inside a spreadsheet. → You’ll realize there’s a better way and use Modash's automatic content collector and tracker and have all the info you need in a single dashboard. • You’ll focus on HOW household name brands run their influencer programs and feel like a failure because it’s not moving the needle for you.  → You’ll focus on your product, your brand, your ideal customers and test your way to success. 🙌
