Like any monumental shift in society, progression always comes with pushback. For employees, this came with the shift to remote work. Millions of us now work from home (or wherever we like), but employers are reluctant to mould their workplaces — physical or remote — into a more flexible environment. The pushback from the C-suite has been through the use of tech. These leaders are now weirdly comfortable with using surveillance software, location tracking, and screen monitoring to measure performance. Are we entering a new era of surveillance capitalism, where employers are collecting every shred of employee data in the name of “productivity”? 🤔 Read our thoughts in the latest volume of 🕝 𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 👇

Toggl’s 2025 Productivity Index revealed that 70% ( 🤯 ) of leaders are comfortable using surveillance software in a remote work setting. But... how did companies get to a place where they don't trust employees and want to use tools like keystroke logging and screen recordings? 🤔 In our recent blog, Elena Prokopets digs into the rise of surveillance software, the legalities around it, and how we can all fight productivity paranoia. 🗣️ 𝗔 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅™ New year… same workplace problems 😬 Thousands of companies are still trying to navigate non-traditional environments and find their way with remote or hybrid places. For leaders, the struggle to balance employee wellbeing without sacrificing productivity is tough. But these companies risk leaving money on the table in 2025. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅™ uncovered an overwhelming majority of C-suite leaders believe shifting their approach to productivity could increase revenue by up to 20%. Toggl’s Chief Revenue Officer Andrew Wray has a message to managers who want to improve team productivity this year: 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗱 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿.

🗣️ 𝗔 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅™ 39% of the C-suite we surveyed for 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅™ admit they don’t believe employees work as well without oversight. Liviu Tanase, founder and CEO of ZeroBounce, isn’t one of them. He measures team productivity by setting goals for specific timeframes and evaluating whether they are met. When we asked him about using surveillance software, his answer was clear: using it for normal business operations — like marketing or support — would be 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆. More company leaders want to monitor employees in the workplace, but these tactics are one of the quickest ways to make your team hate you. In this week's 🕜 𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸, we explore how invasive monitoring employees into rebels—they are more likely to work slower, lie on their timesheets or steal equipment 👇

Not surprised our RAFT-y Head of People has something to say about this 🫣
For everyone who thinks the 9-5 is dead… I have news 😬 We just released our 2025 Toggl Productivity Index and, surprisingly, 68% of leaders say a traditional 9-5 structure is needed — no matter if it's in-office, hybrid, or remote. Here’s where it gets interesting. When we dug a little deeper, 68% of leaders admited employees perform better when they have a say in their work environment. There is no “secret” formula to create a high performing team. But the experiment cannot be done alone. I’m obviously biased, as Toggl’s Results and Responsibility First (RAFT) environment is rooted in flexibility and autonomy. I truly believe the way to build a high-performing team isn’t to just impose frameworks — it’s to find an environment that works best for your team. I’m interested in what you all think. Do you believe the 9-5 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 ever die? 🤔 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘶𝘳 2025 𝘛𝘰𝘨𝘨𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘹 - 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 👇

𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖-𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 saying they are comfortable with using surveillance software 😬 More in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅™ 👉 https://lnkd.in/d8QrhxtX
Boeing’s insane $1 million surveillance software gamble lasted less than 24 hours before it was shut down. And it’s an example of 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 that’s wrong with employee monitoring programs. ICYMI: The company tried to rollout a surveillance program at an office in Seattle in December. Cameras, motion detectors, heat sensors… the whole shebang. It lasted a 𝘥𝘢𝘺 before employees — concerned about privacy — forced management to pull the plug. The worst part about this creepy corporate overstepping is it didn’t surprise me. We recently published our 2025 Toggl Productivity Index and found similar patterns within the C-suite 👇 - 70% of leaders we surveyed said they were comfortable with using surveillance software in remote work environments - A similar number admitted excessive monitoring hurts retention and morale within their team So… Companies are launching surveillance programs 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 it’s harmful to their employee’s experience. Someone make it make sense? This is a short-sighted (and toxic) band-aid to try and fix company productivity. 𝘗.𝘚.
