About us

Utilitas is the largest producer of renewable energy in Estonia. More than a third of Estonian district heating customers are connected to Utilitas networks. Utilitas produces renewable, environmentally friendly, and reasonably priced electricity and provides district heating and cooling. Utilitas is the largest wind energy producer in Latvia - wind farms in Tārgale and Grobiņa - and is building the most modern wind farm in Saarde in Estonia at the moment and developing an offshore wind farm Saare-Liivi in Estonia in the Gulf of Riga. Our activities aim to have an impact on people, the environment, and society, which is why we are also responsible for managing the resulting impacts. For more than a decade, Utilitas has been working to ensure that the energy consumed in cities is produced as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible. We have reduced our carbon footprint by 64% since 2008. Utilitas’ carbon neutrality strategy "From Low to Zero Carbon" envisages achieving carbon neutrality in our district heating and district cooling networks and using 100% renewable sources of energy production by 2030 at the latest. Utilitas produces electricity and heat, as the byproduct, from biomass in cogeneration plants and boiler houses, where the efficiency reaches 100%. District heating is a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution – the best method for supplying heat to densely populated areas. District cooling is the most environmentally friendly and convenient way to cool the rooms of urban buildings while ensuring a healthy indoor climate.

A construction site like any other? 🤔 No, something much bigger. This is the upcoming Telšiai wind farm in Lithuania, which construction is being managed by Utilitas Wind. 🏗 The wind park will consist of 20 modern wind turbines with a capacity of 6,2 MW each, which will be supplied, installed, and maintained by the leading wind turbine manufacturer Vestas. After completion the wind farm will be operated by Latvenergo AS♻

Liisa Puskar, Financial Analyst at Utilitas, and Berit Koks, Lawyer at Utilitas, participated in #DHCSummerSchool24, held from August 25th to 31st, 2024, in Linz, Austria. The program featured insightful lectures, eye-opening site visits, and dynamic networking opportunities. A highlight of this year’s summer school was the REWARDHeat Hackathon - a competition designed to inspire creative solutions to pressing challenges in the district heating and cooling sector.    Liisa was part of the winning team with their project titled “Linzer TORTE” (Transitioning to Optimised Renewable Thermal Energy), which aims to fully decarbonize Linz's district heating and cooling systems by 2040. Read more about their project via the link in the comments. 👇 Both Liisa and Berit found that the program was highly enriching for a young professional, offering plenty of opportunities for reflection on industry-related issues through group work. Furthermore, there was also a strong emphasis on future technologies for district heating and cooling, sector coupling, and achieving carbon neutrality.

In the second quarter of 2024, our companies in Estonia and Latvia produced 425 GWh of energy, representing a 21% increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, 84% of the total production was green energy. 🌿   🔸In June, new renewable energy production equipment was completed at the Utilitas’ Väo energy complex located in Tallinn. The expansion of the complex continues.   🔸"The synchronization of our electricity system with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area will take place in half a year, and all market participants should contribute to this effort according to their capabilities," said the CEO of Utilitas, Priit Koit.   Read more 👇

Throwback to the Opinion Festival / Arvamusfestival and insightful discussions held in the Energetic Economy area. 💭🌾 Two days were full of inspiring, exciting and diverse panels. The discussions brought forward many fascinating thoughts and perspectives, including: 🔸 How can Estonia make its economy competitive again, and what role will renewable energy play? 🔸Why does it take much longer to implement renewable energy projects in Estonia compared to Latvia or Lithuania? Why should the process be faster, and how can this be achieved? 🔸What is the state's role in shaping a conducive business environment? 🔸 What role will green hydrogen play in the future? 🔸How can the Estonian state benefit from renewable energy, and what are the consequences of doing nothing? 🔸How to communicate more effectively on sustainability topics and how open is media to these topics? 🔸How is the competitive advantage of sustainable business models perceived across different sectors? 👉 One thing is certain: renewable energy is here to stay. The question is, how quickly can Estonia adapt to these changes and leverage them to transform the economy. 🚙 It was also possible to see a unique zero-emission hydrogen car, the Toyota Mirai. A big thank you to Kristiina Nauts, Head of Wind Development at Utilitas Wind; Priit Koit, the CEO Utilitas; Rene Tammist, Member of the Board of Utilitas Wind; Robert Kitt, the CEO of Utilitas' companies; Kadri Hansalu, Communications Manager of Utilitas; and Kaire Kuldpere, Environmental Manager of Utilitas, for valuable contributions. 🙏 📷 Karolin Linamäe ja Ain Laidoja

The CEO of our district energy companies, Robert Kitt, shared his insights on the crucial role of renewable energy in driving Estonia's economic growth, attracting investments, and creating new jobs and added value. ♻ "We need to invest our way out of the recession. New investments create jobs and generate added value," he emphasized. Kitt also addressed the environmental challenges Estonia faces: "For Sweden, with emissions approximately 100 times lower, and Finland, with emissions 10 times lower, Estonian products are perceived as too environmentally harmful, which serves as a factor against doing business with us." Additionally, he underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in the energy industry, noting that integrated solutions across different energy sectors will make our system more efficient, flexible, and reliable, enabling a smoother transition to a low-carbon economy.
