Oil Well Casing Drill Bit Size Selection Chart | #drilling_manual The drilling of oil wells, both onshore and offshore, involves the use of selection charts to determine the sizes of the casing and drill bits. The design process begins from the bottom to the top, starting with the production tubing. The tubing size is designed to maintain a specific wellhead flowing pressure or to enable the well to produce at a specified flow rate. The size of the production casing or casing line is based on the size of the tubing. The production casing should have an inside diameter that allows for adequate radial clearance between the tubing and casing, so that the tubing can be fished out during workover operations. To ensure that the production casing is placed correctly in the well, the necessary bit size to drill the last interval of the well must be 0.375-0.5 inches, or preferably 0.75 inches larger than the outside diameter of the production casing, as shown in the table below. The table above provides commonly used drilling bit sizes that can be safely used for drilling a hole into which various API casing strings can be placed without getting stuck.
