🌍💧 Citizen science is empowering the next generation! At the The American University in Cairo (AUC), 350 students tracked water consumption, gathering over 4,000 observations. This initiative engages students with real-world environmental issues while fostering critical thinking. By analyzing their own water usage, they gain valuable insights into sustainability and the impact of their choices. Within the activities of the 7th Cairo Water Week and the 9th Africa Water Week, a meeting was held with representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the “Canadian International Research Development Center” and the “International Organization for Desalination and Water Reuse” to discuss a proposal to prepare a regional project for a number of From countries in the Middle East and North Africa region in the field of desalination for intensive food production. I pointed out that the Middle East and North Africa region includes 13 of the 17 countries that suffer most from water scarcity in the world, which requires adopting new policies to deal with this challenge. #WaterForAll #CWW2024 #AMCOW #MWRI

📢 This Sunday, as part of #Tax4SDGs, we launched a Capacity Building Training on the Tax Auditing of State-Owned Entities (SOEs) (the “Training”) with UNDP Egypt Deputy Resident Representative Ghimar Deeb, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority Dr. Rasha Abdelaal, Head of Policy and Partnerships Reham Youssef, and, the National Tax for SDGs Coordinator Aya Fasih. As part of the capacity-building support offered to the Egyptian Tax Authority under the #Tax4SDGs initiative, this Training has been devised in response to recent legislative amendments that have cancelled tax exemptions previously enjoyed by SOEs. UNDP’s #Tax4SDGs initiative was launched under the Sustainable Finance Hub in 2022 with the objective of strengthening capacities within tax administrations and assisting governments in better aligning tax policies with the #SDGs.This stems from the vision that taxes can play a critical role in addressing economic challenges and promoting sustainable development while serving as a sustainable source of revenue for developing countries.

📰 In the News: The Egyptian Red Sea Initiative via The New Arab 🌊 Egypt has launched a $14 million initiative Egyptian Red Sea Initiative (ESRI), in collaboration with the UNDP Egypt, Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), and USAID. This project aims to protect and preserve the Red Sea's coral reefs, which are some of the most resilient and diverse in the world. Running from 2024 to 2030, it will focus on conserving approximately 99,899 hectares of coral reefs, specifically targeting 13,637 reefs in Wadi El Gemal and 50,612 in the Northern Islands Reserve. Alessandro Fracassetti, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative, highlights that this initiative serves as “a natural laboratory to study the effects of climate change on coral communities.” He notes that by protecting this thermal refuge, the initiative aims to strengthen global efforts to safeguard coral reefs and explore adaptive measures. Amany Nakhla, Assistant Resident Representative at UNDP Egypt, emphasizes that the Red Sea's reefs face threats from coastal development and tourism. This initiative is essential for boosting conservation and promoting sustainable practices across sectors. It represents a significant step in protecting Egypt’s natural heritage and ensuring the health of its marine ecosystems. 🔗 Explore more: https://shorturl.at/zjgv2

At Cairo Water Week, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative, Alessandro Fracassetti, spoke on the panel "Innovation & Financing Resilient Solutions for Water Security". The discussion focused on the urgent water challenges exacerbated by #climatechange. Key insights included: 🌍 Climate Impact: With 80% of climate impacts tied to water, this issue needs immediate attention. By 2050, water scarcity could cost the region 14% of its GDP. 💧Financing gap: Despite the urgent need for sustainable water solutions, only a small proportion of global infrastructure funding goes towards water. 🔧 Technology and innovation: Current water technologies often have their limitations, but new solutions are essential for resilience. Scaling these innovations requires strong partnerships and significant investment. 🌱 UNDP's AWARE initiative: Launched at COP27, the AWARE initiative promotes cooperation on water as a key climate change adaptation strategy, focusing on accessible, cost-effective water solutions and addressing the water-food crisis. Looking to the future, UNDP Egypt is committed to strengthening cross-sector partnerships to advance innovative technologies for water management. By focusing on the water- food- energy nexus, we can advance a transformative climate agenda and secure a sustainable future. At Cairo Water Week , RR Alessandro Fracassetti discussed innovative water solutions amid climate challenges, highlighting UNDP Egypt's AWARE initiative and the need for new technologies, partnerships and investments to tackle water scarcity and promote sustainable management.

🌾Celebrating #RuralWomenDay! Today, we honor the vital contributions of women in rural communities, who play a crucial role in agriculture, food security, and sustainable development. At UNDP Accelerator Labs in Egypt, we explored green opportunities using innovative tools like future foresight and collective intelligence, developing tailored solutions to enhance access to finance in both rural and urban settings. For over a decade, our ENID project Egypt Foundation for Integrated Development (ElNidaa), in partnership with Ministry of Planning, Economic Development & International Cooperation, has transformed marginalized communities in Rural Upper Egypt. By empowering women through skills training and job creation, we’re paving the way for a future aligned with the #SDGs and Vision 2030. Focused on socio-economic empowerment, ENID’s area-based integrated development approach in Qena, Sohag, and Luxor has become the cornerstone of our success. Empowering these women is key to building resilient communities and achieving sustainable development!🌱💚
