🏆 We are thrilled to announce that Fernando Menis has been awarded the prestigious #FrateSole International #Prize for Sacred Architecture 2024 for the #Church of the Holy Redeemer of Las Chumberas, which was chosen from among 128 proposals from 28 countries > https://lnkd.in/dmbyneYu Considered the "Oscar" of religious architecture, the "Frate Sole" is awarded every four years and comes with a €15,000 award, in addition to prizes for the second and third places. Previous winners include renowned figures such as Tadao Ando, Álvaro Siza, Richard Meier, John Pawson, and Rafael Moneo. The award ceremony will take place on October 5th in Pavia, Italy. Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of high school students from Pavia, winners of the #PremioDEA (Design, Construction, and Architecture)—a competition promoted by the Fondazione Frate Sole and the Young Group of ANCE Pavia, with the patronage of the Municipality of Pavia and the University of Pavia. The 2024 edition of the award focused on the Church of Las Chumberas, designed by Fernando Menis, which won the 2024 International Sacred Architecture Award #FrateSole. These brilliant students took on the challenge of reimagining the church, blending architecture, spirituality, and innovation. Their prize? A study trip to Tenerife, where they had the opportunity to explore some of our projects, guided by architect #FernandoMenis personally: The Church of Las Chumberas, The Headquarters of the Presidency of the Canary Islands and The Cultural Space and Garden El Tanque. It was a pleasure to engage with professors Santo Occhiuzzi, Daniela Caruso, and Stefano Bordonaro and to meet the young talented Riccardo, Celeste, Alessandro, and Farah Monique!  . #architecture #design

🏆 We are thrilled to share some exciting news: Fernando Menis has been recognized with the #ADFDesignExcellenceAward 2025 for his project, the Church of the Holy Redeemer of Las Chumberas—an international award that highlights excellence in architectural design globally. Additionally, the project will be showcased at #MilanDesignWeek alongside the other two award-winning projects selected by the Aoyama Foundation of Japan. The exhibition, organized by ADF in collaboration with the Ordine e Fondazione dell'Ordine degli Architetti di Milano and the firm GARDE, will be open to visitors starting April 8. The ADF Design Award, organized annually since 2010 by Japan’s Aoyama Design Forum (ADF), aims to support architects and interior designers worldwide. The jury for its 15th edition consisted of 10 esteemed members among which: Alberto Bortolotti, Vice President of the Ordine e Fondazione dell'Ordine degli Architetti di Milano; Sheng KEAT ONG, Keat Ong Design and President of the Asia-Pacific Space Designers Association - APSDA; Dawn Lim, Executive Director of the DesignSingapore Council; Sanmitra Chitte, Dean of the World University of Design and President of the Association of Designers of India. [#workinprogress] With a 15,000 m² extension, the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to become a #green refuge in the heart of the city after its #rehabilitation. The restored and repurposed neo-Gothic building will host cultural activities, while a new plaza will open up views towards the sea. The park is home to a majestic Ceiba tree, whose canopy spans over 20 meters wide—a centenary botanical gem—alongside other flora that will be preserved and expanded with new specimens. Amidst the greenery, visitors will uncover hidden treasures, such as `La Femme Bouteille´, a bronze sculpture by Joan Miró, given to the city in the 1970s. This park will become a #publicspace where #nature and cultural #heritage come together. . 📢 Exciting news: architect Fernando Menis will be delivering a lecture at the American University of Sharjah – AUS College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) tomorrow, February 18, at 5:30 PM. In his talk, Menis will discuss his system of thought and practice - hypotheses, experiments, and innovations in #architecture - inspired by #nature and deeply rooted in the insular experience of the Canary Islands. [#workinprogress] A minimal intervention with maximum impact: At the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park we are undertaking a careful and delicate process of #AdaptiveReuse, preserving its neo-Gothic architectural #heritage and its natural surroundings while adapting them to meet the needs of today and the future. This transformation will show how minimal intervention can create a significant impact, allowing the past and future to coexist harmoniously. Originally built in 1903 by Central European nuns, the site—comprising an old church and its garden—became Tenerife’s first school for girls, the #ColegiodelaAsunción, which remained operational until 1978. More than just a historic structure, the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park is an essential part of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s identity and collective memory, as well as the city's only neo-Gothic religious building. Comparto un momento muy especial que vivimos en la #Iglesia de Las Chumberas, espacio que tuve el honor de proyectar. El Gobierno de las Islas Canarias eligió este lugar como escenario para grabar la versión conmemorativa del #villancico canario "Una sobre el mismo mar", con la participación de varios artistas canarios, entre ellos el gran #BenitoCabrera, con quien aparezco en esta fotografía. Este tema, que marcó una época y se convirtió en un himno navideño para Canarias, celebra este año su 30º aniversario. Quiero agradecer a Benito y a todos los músicos participantes por llenar este espacio de #música y magia. The Holy Redeemer Church in Las Chumberas, Tenerife, designed by Fernando Menis Arquitectura, is a long-term project aimed at revitalizing a 1970s neighborhood. Funded by community donations and the Bishopric of Tenerife, it includes a community center, a public square, and the church, though some work remains unfinished due to funding. The design is inspired by the volcanic landscape of the Canary Islands, featuring large concrete structures with cracks that let in natural light. These light-filled spaces highlight key areas like the altar and baptismal font, enhancing the church’s spiritual atmosphere. Built with local materials, including volcanic stone, the church is energy-efficient and acoustically designed for both religious and community events.
