⭐ Today, in our #NetworksWeeklySeminar, Michal Tereszkowski-Kaminski, Research Engineer at IMDEA Networks and PhD Student at King’s College London, will give a talk on “A study of Malicious Source Code Reuse Among GitHub, StackOverflow and Underground Forums”. 🔹 To date, most analysis of collaboration between malware authors has been performed on meta-data and compiled binaries, while ignoring artifacts present in the source code. We collect a vast amount of malicious source code from Underground Forums posts, Underground Forum code attachments, and GitHub repositories and devise a methodology that allows us to filter out most auxiliary code, leaving the measurement to focus on malicious code. En él, nuestro director Arturo Azcorra realiza la siguiente reflexión: “Las telecomunicaciones y los circuitos integrados (chips) han cobrado una relevancia geoestratégica superior a recursos tradicionales como el petróleo y las materias primas”. Según Azcorra, "si el dinero es la sangre de la economía de un país, las telecomunicaciones son su sistema nervioso: sin ellas, el país se paraliza". 📡 Además, subraya la debilidad de Europa en áreas clave como el software y la microelectrónica, donde otros actores globales, como Estados Unidos y China, llevan la delantera. ⭐ Today, in our #NetworksWeeklySeminar, our PhD Student Vahid Ghafouri will give a talk about his latest paper “I love pinapple on pizza! = I hate pinapple on pizza: Stance-Aware Sentence Transformers for Opinion Mining”. 🔹 Sentence transformers’ job is to convert pieces of text into embedded vectors, where similar (dissimilar) pieces of text have spatially close (far) vectors. This makes them a very computationally efficient tool for tasks such as text-clustering, semantic search, retrieval augmented generation (RAG) for LLMs, etc. Yet, they suffer from a fundamental limitation: If two statements are topically similar, but stance-wise opposite, sentence transformers will still convert them into spatially close vectors. ⭐ Today, in our #NetworksWeeklySeminar, our Alumnus Andre Zanella will give a talk on “Characterizing, Modeling and Exploiting the Mobile Demand Footprint of Large Public Protests”. 🔹 This talk will be a dry run for an accepted work at ACM IMC ‘24. It will present a holistic characterization of the consumption of the whole spectrum of mobile applications during social protests. Hinging upon pervasive measurements in the production network of the incumbent network operator and focusing on the 2023 French pension reform strikes, it unveils how large masses of protesters generate a clearly recognizable footprint on mobile service demands in the examined events.
