🔵 On #WorldObesityDay, we want to put the spotlight on some of the projects that Open Evidence has been working on in recent years. Obesity is a complex issue influenced by environmental factors, lifestyle choices (such as excessive consumption of energy-dense foods and decreased physical activity), cultural aspects, as well as medications, diseases, and genetic variations. Back in 2014, the EU Action Plan on Childhood Obesity (2014-2020) was launched. 🔍 OE Insight #5: We often make energy-saving decisions based on what we think works best. But are these perceptions accurate? Behavioural science shows that our perceptions are shaped by cognitive biases and mental shortcuts (called heuristics), frequently leading to systematic errors. One reason for misjudging energy consumption is the use of “availability heuristic”, which leads people to overestimate energy use for frequently used appliances (like computers) while underestimating it for those used less frequently (like outdoor grills). Another cognitive mechanism, “attribute substitution”, leads consumers to equate appliance size or temperature with its energy consumption. Some of these attributes – like appliance temperature – can actually be useful indicators, while others – like usage frequency – are misleading, as shown in the graph below (adapted from a study by Schille-Hudson and colleagues). Directing consumers to use the right heuristics can effectively help them make more accurate judgements about energy usage. Smart technologies and real-time energy feedback can also help correct misperceptions. However, to drive meaningful behaviour change, interventions must go beyond correcting misperceptions; they should also address other aspects of behaviour, such as preferences or habits, while considering the cognitive mechanisms behind them. 🩺 This week on World Cancer Day, the European Commission published the final report of the ‘Study on mapping and evaluating the implementation of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan’ conducted by Open Evidence in collaboration with PwC EU Services for DG SANTE and HaDEA.   📖 The study included a future-proofing analysis of the adequacy of the EBCP, a country analysis of national measures implemented and barriers experienced, an analysis of the application process and implementation of cancer-related projects funded under the EU4Health programme and a monitoring framework of the EBCP at EU level.   🔊 A huge thanks to the team and to all the stakeholders and experts who contributed to this important study, that informed the Commission review of the EBCP.  Final study report: https://lnkd.in/dgKSCvtv  Commission review of the EBCP: https://lnkd.in/gsKmN_YD  #cancer #EBCP #EU4Health
