RMIT University and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) have announced a new partnership in civil engineering.   This week in Madrid, leaders of the two universities – RMIT’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron and UPM’s Rector Guillermo Cisneros Pérez – signed an agreement for a new collaboration that will equip civil engineering graduates with a competitive edge in the global engineering industry.   The partnership will enable masters students at UPM in Madrid to complete part of their degree in Melbourne, Australia as part of RMIT's Master of Civil Engineering, earning dual qualifications from both UPM and RMIT.   The agreement signing took place in Madrid at UPM’s main campus with RMIT's Deputy Vice-Chancellor International and Engagement and Vice-President Saskia Loer Hansen and RMIT Europe's Executive Director Marta Fernandez Bertos joined by UPM's José Miguel Atienza and Vicente Alcaraz. Yesterday in Madrid, RMIT University announced that the €7.2 million Australia-Spain Network for Innovation and Research Excellence (AuSpire) has been approved for funding by the European Commission. Coordinated by RMIT Europe, the five-year training program will employ 28 postdoctoral fellows to conduct innovative research projects grounded in the concept of planetary wellbeing. RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron said that AuSpire will further strengthen the already significant research ties between Australia and Spain, laying the groundwork for ongoing collaboration. The announcement took place at the Cepsa Madrid office, a project partner, and was joined by Ambassador-designate of Australia to Spain Her Excellency Rosemary Morris-Castico and Joaquín Mollinedo, President of the Fundación Consejo España-Australia. Partners in the program include ACCIONA, Almirall, Aurecon, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Cepsa, DATLIGHT, Dovetail Electric Aviation, EURECAT, Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2), IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, monodon, RMIT University, Universidad Loyola and University of Canberra. Professor Laurene Vaughan, a practising designer, researcher and educator, has joined RMIT Europe in the role of Research Director. We are looking forward to welcoming her in person at our office in Barcelona next week. With a diverse research background in the field of design and over 20 years’ experience at RMIT University, Laurene will continue the groundwork laid by Professor Wendy Steele to establish a regenerative futures direction at RMIT Europe. “I’m looking forward to having that extended opportunity of working with the team in Europe, and being able to continue to collaborate and really make some solid plans,” she said. Laurene will also continue her work for PRS, a presentation of practice-based PhD submissions held twice annually as well as her supervision of PhD candidates under the multidisciplinary doctoral networks REDI Program and CoDesign4Transitions.
