In the media and 🔜 out at sea! 🌊
📰 In the media 🗞 How a radar from The Hague prevents birds and bats from colliding with offshore wind farms When large numbers of birds are approaching our future wind farm, located about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast, wind turbines can be shut or slowed down automatically on demand for a while. To prevent bird mortality by collision, we asked Robin Radar Systems to supply a radar and combine it with DHI's alert system, camera, sensors and AI software. For baseline monitoring the system will be placed on an autonomous floating platform, developed by MIDO/Wedge Global. Once our wind farm is operational, the system will be attached to the wind turbines. Sibylle Giraud, Vice President Wind & Environmental Practice at Robin Radar, explains how the so-called MAX radar works: "Our radar sends out a signal. Everything in the sky reflects that signal. We can detect a signal down to a bat level. We can provide a complete understanding of the bird and bat behaviour and can track bird patterns in a specific area, allowing wind farm operators to take action. We create the alert so they can shut down the turbine." Our FLORA project which started 3 years ago as a creative concept has evolved into a decisive design. Together with Lúcid we are proud to be a recipient of the 2024 iF DESIGN award in the category of ´industry´!
We are excited to share that two of our groundbreaking projects have been honored with the prestigious iF DESIGN Awards! The DBOX5, designed together with PVH - PVHardware, redefines the concept of an industrial box and turns it into a new generation of solar controllers that meet security, durability, efficiency, and sustainability standards. FLORA, designed for Wedge Global, sets a new design precedent in the marine infrastructure sector, traditionally focused on technique rather than design. This solution is crucial for assessing the viability of wind farms, with a special focus on local bird ecosystems. Thanks to our customers for their trust in our design approach. And thanks again to our team, whose dedication is making it possible to increase this awards list year by year. #iFDESIGNAWARD #Innovation #Sustainability #DesignExcellence #Teamwork

Moonshot 🚀! Our Floating Radar (FLORA) ocean station makes a debut. We're proud to share that we've teamed up Robin Radar Systems to support the Ecowende wind farm in becoming the most ecologically friendly wind farm ever! Our FLORA 1 ocean station will help unlock the most advanced framework for monitoring of flying birds and bats at offshore wind farms. Adopting Robin´s MAX® bird radar, our wave energy technology will ´propel´ Ecowende´s aims to set a new ecological standard for building and operating offshore wind farms. Moreover DHI´s MUSE will add an extra layer: sensor integration and artificial intelligence (AI) species recognition. The goal is monumental: minimal impact on the natural habitat of birds, bats and marine mammals, and with a thriving underwater world. To do so, the wind farm developer – a joint venture of Shell, Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. and Eneco – has put state-of-the-art monitoring and mitigation technologies and innovations at the core. “The project’s innovation challenges have brought the very best out of the partners, including MIDO. In our case we’ve had to continually question the possible problems and constantly iterate, learn and optimize the design to achieve system unanimity. We’re building something almost dream-like together by combining energy and sensor technologies. We call it “A match made in Holland,” said Francisco Garcia, CEO of Wedge / MIDO. “We share that passion, and like us, Ecowende will break ground and take risks to make essential technologies scalable and sustainable. We're delighted to accompany them on this fantastic project, we'll deploy no less than four flagship radars, including our first-ever MAX® on a floating platform.” - Sibylle Giraud, VP Wind and Environmental Practice at Robin Radar. “Ecowende will be a pioneering lighthouse for eco-innovations in offshore wind. DHI is ready to support the mission of truly integrating sustainability into the design and operation of offshore wind farms. With MUSE, authorities and wind farm developers can protect birds and bats from collision and still achieve the most ambitious goals for renewable energy production.” - Mikael Kamp, Executive Vice President for Energy & Ports, DHI: “Bird ecologists will work on accurately mapping seabird behaviour around our innovations, patterns of migratory birds and improving existing collision models. Based on these insights, we can continuously improve our own approach by finetuning innovations, and we can help future wind farms.” - Marin van Regteren, Marine Ecologist at Ecowende explains. #waveenergy #portsector #circulareconomy
