🌍 Yesterday, #ECCA participated in the "#Transformative_Clean_Cooking: Sustainable Development Models" session at the Humanitarian Energy Conference (#HEC). This session featured participants from various African private sectors, development organizations, and international entities such as Energising Development (EnDev), NORCAP - part of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Mercy Corps, World Food Programme, MECS programme, and SNV. The discussion focused on clean cooking access for households and institutions like schools, especially in displacement settings. 🔑 #Key_insights_included: 📊 Overview of current clean cooking status in displacement settings from the Global Platform for Action (GPA) & #NORCAP-led mapping exercise. 📚 Case studies on clean cooking solutions for households and institutions. 🌐 Exploration of diverse business and delivery models across different countries. During the session, Dawit Tibebu highlighted the significant challenge of clean cooking access in sub-Saharan Africa, where national levels are often below 20%. For instance, in Ethiopia, only 9% have access to clean cooking, with over 90% relying on unsustainable biomass fuels and open fires. This situation underscores the difficulty of ensuring clean cooking access for displaced communities. However, strategic approaches can address this issue for both host and refugee populations. Here’s how: #National_Strategies_and_Integration: - Ethiopia's Multi-Actor Cooking Energy Strategy for Refugees and Host Communities (2022) integrates refugees into national clean cooking initiatives, promoting inclusivity and equity. #Community_Based_Approaches: - Training programs for improved cookstove and fuel production. - Community kitchens and shared facilities for economic opportunities. #Innovative_Financial_Models: - Collaborating with the private sector for alternative financial models like carbon financing and pay-as-you-cook systems. #Leveraging_International_Funding: - Accessing international funds and grants for energy access improvements. - Partnering with NGOs, UN agencies, and international organizations for additional resources and expertise.
