About us

We are upcycling food industry by-products into planet-friendly protein, and pioneering a new approach to food systems—one that supports healthy, delicious diets for everyone while minimizing environmental impact. Enifer, a spin-off company from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, was founded by five scientists in 2020 to develop and commercialize the proprietary PEKILO® technology further. A process originally developed and used by the Finnish forest industry at a commercial scale, the PEKILO® technology enables the biotechnological conversion of dilute side streams into a high-protein and fiber ingredient, PEKILO® mycoprotein.

    Great news! 💪 Enifer's latest Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) confirms just how sustainable PEKILO®Pet really is.The cradle-to-gate carbon footprint (CFP) comes in at just 0.93 kgCO₂e per kg, staying well below the 1kg mark. This reinforces what we’ve always known—PEKILO®Pet delivers on its promise of a healthy, sustainable protein. With the global pet population growing and studies suggesting that the ecological footprint of cats and dogs can rival that of humans, depending on their size and diet, it’s more important that ever to consider the environmental impact of animal nutrition.   • It's been an another incredible year, filled with milestones and achievements. Here’s a recap of some key highlights: 🎉36M€ in Funding Secured and Factory Plans Announced: We kicked off the year on a high note with news of a landmark €12 million grant from Business Finland, accompanied by the announcement of our first factory in Kantvik, Finland. This was soon followed by an additional €24 million in funding and loans, securing full financial backing for the project. 🎉Construction Kickoff In autumn, construction officially began in Kantvik, as we stated laying foundations for our factory—a major step toward sustainable protein production. 🎉Novel Food Dossier Submitted to EFSA A huge milestone for the team came with the submission of our Novel Food Dossier to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This achievement is no small feat and represents months of rigorous effort. 🎉Recognized Among WIRED’s Top Startups of 2024 Enifer was thrilled to be named one of Wired’s Top Startups of 2024, standing among other innovative companies shaping the future. 🎉PEKILO® Deemed Highly Digestible Both PEKILO® and PEKILO®Pet were studied this year, with results showing excellent digestibility. This validation marks a big step forward in demonstrating the value of our products. More studies to come! 🎉Welcoming New Brewers of PEKILO® We were excited to welcome six new team members to the Enifer this year. With the factory gearing up for its ramp-up phase, we anticipate many more talented professionals joining us in the year ahead.     Did you know Enifer got its start at VTT when scientists—now Enifer's CEO, Simo Ellilä, and Chief Technology Officer, Ville Pihlajaniemi—rediscovered the long-lost PEKILO® process and recognized its potential for upcycling side streams? Originally developed in the 1970s to transform pulp industry by-products into animal feed, the PEKILO® process was shelved in the 1990s, leaving the original strain tucked away in VTT’s freezer for three decades. Fast forward to today, Enifer has revived and refined this innovative process, adapting it to utilize a variety of side streams and refining it for human consumption.
