The Future > Factory > Furniture > collective is back at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. From 19 to 26 October, you can find us in the Klokgebouw, where Leolux, together with Arco - We are Arco, we make tables, CSrugs, Gelderland, Label van den Berg, Lande Family, Montis BV and partners Dutch Design Week and industry association Koninklijke CBM presents ‘Kom van die bank af’ (literally: ‘get off that sofa’, a Dutch saying meaning ‘get a move on’). The project embodies a series of documentary portraits, highlighting groundbreaking initiatives within the Dutch furniture sector, all focusing on making the transition to a sustainable production chain.   The first portrait, ‘Stof tot nadenken uit Enschede Textielstad’ (‘Food for thought from Enschede Textielstad’), revolves around Annemieke Koster. Her ambition: to make Enschede a world player in circular industrial textiles. In 11 years of passionate entrepreneurship, Annemieke's initiative, Enschede Textielstad, has grown into the most sustainable scalable textile producer in the Netherlands, making high-quality fabrics from recycled materials (pre-used cotton, denim, PET, Tencel, hemp and flax).    At our stand in the Klokgebouw, you can experience the unique textiles Enschede Textielstad makes on several pieces of furniture made by members of the collective. 🌱 𝗗𝗮𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗶𝘁, 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗺𝘀𝘁! In Twente zetten we samen stappen richting een circulaire toekomst. Een mooi voorbeeld is het project van Asito, waarin ze samen met Twentse partners werkten aan circulaire bedrijfskleding. Het project om circulaire bedrijfskleding te ontwikkelen begon met het initiatief van Dirksen Bedrijfskleding om de productie terug te halen naar Twente, met een sterke focus op duurzaamheid. Modeontwerpster Hellen van Rees en Ackelien Hageman van Enschede Textielstad werden aangehaakt voor het ontwerp en de ontwikkeling van materialen en stoffen. We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who attended the Circular Workwear Panel at the Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week at Saxion University of Applied Sciences Enschede last Wednesday. The event began with a screening of Patagonia's documentary Shitthropocene, which encourages viewers to be more mindful of their purchases. The film advocates for buying less but better—investing in durable, high-quality clothing that can be repaired rather than discarded. It served as a thought-provoking introduction to the evening, highlighting the urgent need to address the environmental impact of fast fashion and consumer habits. Moderated by Jan-Chris Hullegie and Jurrie Barkel, the panel featured our CTO, Anton Luiken, along with industry leaders including Hellen van Rees, Annemieke Koster from Enschede Textielstad, and Jose Albring from Asito. “Heb jij nog een leuk idee voor een give away voor de diplomering?”, aldus onze vraag aan Annemieke Koster van Enschede Textielstad enkele weken geleden. Elk jaar weer een hele opgave om iets van waarde (!) te bedenken voor mee te geven bij de diplomering. Altijd weer een memorabel moment en dan wil je toch iets speciaals doen. We hebben ze in de afgelopen jaren allemaal voorbij zien komen, de zoveelste drinkbeker (iets met plastic probleem), de gerecyclde polyester tasjes (…..uit China), de pen (wie schrijft er nog?) Dat moet anders kunnen dacht Annemieke, dus die ging aan de slag. In de bijgaande foto’s zie je het geweldige resultaat….een tote bag, ja ik weet het, maar niet zomaar een. Gemaakt op het innovatieve jacquard weefgetouw vertelt het ontwerp het verhaal van de plattegrond van Enschede, incl. Saxion logo en gemaakt van overwegend gerecylde garens. In de draaghengsels zijn de trotse woorden “FTT Graduate” ingeweven, en de tasjes zijn bovendien ‘lokaal’ in elkaar gezet door FTT docent collega’s, onder aanvoering van Yvonne Hillebrand. Hoe gaaf en duurzaam wil je het hebben? Fijne zomerperiode en tot in het nieuwe studiejaar!

I'm excited to announce our latest breakthrough in revolutionizing cotton cultivation and localizing the global denim supply chain: Greenhouse-Grown Cotton. Being deeply involved in every step of this journey - from sowing, flowering, and boll development to harvest and production - has been incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the entire process firsthand has enhanced my appreciation for cotton and the beauty of nature's cycles. What makes greenhouse cultivation truly special is the possibility to cultivate in a controlled environment. This method offers great potential to reduce the impact on land and water use while supporting biodiversity. There's something truly captivating about cotton, but our goal went beyond simply growing it. We aimed to transform the cotton into a pair of jeans within a local supply chain. We successfully completed the entire process—ginning, spinning, weaving, sewing, dyeing, and finishing in the Netherlands. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the G-Star RAW team, Filip van Noort (Wageningen University & Research), Victor Sandberg (Dutch Cotton), Paula Gerritsen, Liset Pander (Spinning Jenny) , Annemieke Koster (Enschede Textielstad) and Celia Geraedts (Blueprint Amsterdam. Thank you for your true dedication and support in making this vision a reality. Eerste Werksessie CEO Circular Economy Office: Het toepassen van circulaire en duurzame stoffen in kantooromgevingen. Het CEO-project zet zich in voor de transformatie van de kantoormeubelsector naar een circulaire, innovatieve, kosten- en hulpbronnenefficiënte economie. Gisteren hebben we onze eerste werksessie gehouden bij Enschede Textielstad. We hebben waardevolle input verzameld over de benodigdheden en wensen vanuit de sector om deze transformatie mogelijk te maken. Dank aan alle deelnemers voor hun actieve bijdrage en inzichten! Yesterday a small delegation of Tommy H visited us where they discovered all our amazing textiles educational & research facilities, from the Santoni seamless knitting machine and state of the art testing facilities to the Circular Textile Lab and the sewing labs. Besides we visited Enschede Textielstad, where textiles entrepreneur Annemieke Koster explained them everything about the future of weaving... Also a meeting with management of SaXcell, Erik van der Weerd, was part of the full agenda. It was a day full of inspiration and exchanging between industry and education and how we can collectively increase positive impact for all stakeholders.
