Welcome on board to the #lifeatfinnair series! ✈️: Who are you and what do you do at Finnair? "I’m Johanna Tikanmäki, FRMS Manager at Finnair. I work at our Safety, Security and Compliance Management doing fatigue risk management, flight data monitoring and other safety data analytics. With fatigue risk management, we aim to ensure that our aircrew working irregular schedules 24/7 across time zones have duty rosters that enable them to remain sufficiently free from fatigue. Flight data monitoring, on the other hand, refers to using similar data that accident investigators examine from the so called “black boxes” to quantify our everyday flights. We aggregate and analyze the recorded data from all flights allowing the relevant Flight Operations colleagues to assess whether our current normal is good enough or whether action is needed." ✈️: How long have you worked here, and what made you apply? "I’ve been with Finnair for eight years. I actually never applied but was asked to join. Back then, the new European fatigue risk management regulations became effective, and I had been working with the topic already in my previous company." ✈️: What do you like the most about working at Finnair? "I like the variety of everything I get to do for a worthwhile cause. Even if it’s a bit of a cliché, every day is always different, and the 24/7 operation brings surprises for us in the back office. I have a fairly unique background for someone working in flight safety in that it has nothing to do with aviation. Most of my colleagues are either pilots or engineers or have otherwise worked in various operational roles at the airport. I studied mathematics, physics and computer science and ended up in aviation quite accidentally as an analyst at a flight safety department. I love finding worthwhile information in large datasets and presenting them in simple visualizations. I get to work independently, solve interesting problems, and use my judgment on setting the priorities, yet I’ve always been supported by colleagues who know way more about flying than I do." ✈️: What’s your favourite Finnair destination? "I do love skiing in Lapland, especially in early spring when the sun is shining again, the temperature is not that cold anymore but snow is still white." ✈️: Can you tell us something most people don’t know about you? "My father used to hold a private pilot license. I have some ten seconds experience at the controls of a Cessna with him and no intention of getting a license myself even when a museum guide once found my performance on their fighter jet simulator surprisingly convincing." ✈️: What tip would you give to someone considering a career in aviation? "There are many paths to aviation. I once had a teacher who wisely said that it’s very difficult to find a field that you both love studying and then building a career on. What I did study, would probably nowadays be called data science. It was great fun and I’m definitely loving what I do now."

Our CEO, Turkka Kuusisto, and Communications Trainee, Aida Vellamo, both started working at Finnair six months ago. We asked them to reveal how their Finnair journey has been so far. 💙 ✈️: How have the first six months at Finnair been like? Turkka: “The first six months, have been very inspiring in my new job. I’ve had the opportunity to meet hundreds of my new colleagues, lots of customers and other external stakeholders, and I’ve really been enjoying my time at Finnair.” ✈️: What has surprised you the most about your role? Aida: “The diversity and responsibility of my role, despite being a trainee! I get to create, publish and monitor content in our social media channels and our Blue Wings online magazine, work as one of our media desk representatives, and participate in both planning and implementing materials together with lovely, experienced colleagues. My own job has got me in awe!” ✈️: What do you find most challenging in your position? Turkka: “As a curious mind, I want to learn the company, business and industry as quickly as possible. Finding enough time for all areas parallel is the biggest bottleneck for the time being.” ✈️: Can you share your most memorable day so far? Aida: “My favourite tasks have been conducting interviews and meetings for content creation with all kinds of fascinating people at Finnair. The most memorable one was probably a flight to Larnaca, Cyprus back in June — I filmed content to our social media with two of our pilots and got to learn so much about their job and Finnair as a whole.” ✈️: What is something valuable you’ve learned in these six months? Turkka: “The most valuable thing I’ve found is the profound safety culture and safety management system of Finnair. That’s the foundation of an airline company, and Finnair and all my colleagues really excels in delivering safety on a daily basis.” ✈️: What are you looking forward to in the next six months? Aida: “For now, I'll be working at Finnair until the end of November. After this, it is time to focus on my studies for a bit, as I aim to graduate from university next year. From there, everything is possible, and I'm excited to see where life takes me!”
