GIM Robotics at ROS 2 Expert Workshop III (31.10.2024, Hervanta, Tampere) Workshop for all people interested in ROS2 and its practical use in industry and academia. Our old friends at Tampere University and in FIMA – Forum for Intelligent Machines Ry are arranging the 3rd open technical workshop on Robotic Operating System 2 (ROS2). These ROS2 workshops are building Finnish community among the people interested on the topic and who are its practical users in industry and academia. The event is free and open for everyone. Presentations are coming from academia (Aalto University, University of Oulu and Tampere University) as well as from industry (Atostek, GIM Robotics, Insta, Karelics, Nomga Oy). GIM Robotics has a long history with ROS/ROS2 and we consider both elementary part of our success story. Our CTO, Dr. José Luis Peralta, will give a presentation titled as “Advancing Autonomy: Leveraging ROS2 for Driving Assistance and Off-Road Robotic Solutions in Research and Industry”. It presents our experiences how we have applied ROS2 to various real-life use cases with some of our public clients and partners. About us
We make any mobile machine more intelligent - GIM Robotics' robust centimetre-level localisation and situational awareness software works in all weather conditions. GIM stands for Generic Intelligent Machines. Our competence covers e.g. sensor fusion, real time 3D localization and mapping, traversability analysis, computer vision systems and dynamic object tracking. GIM’s universal 3D mapping and localization solutions are not fixed to any particular environment or sensor technology and have been used for example in mining, construction, agriculture, forestry and marine applications. We maintain a set of tools that can be utilized to tailor customer specific needs. GIM provides a variety of robotic platforms for prototyping and proof-of-concept development. For example, our logistics platforms have been tested in retail stores and industrial logistics. Robots accelerate the research and development by enabling completely autonomous data gathering. Autonomous machine operation can be tested in GIM’s precision measured test area in Espoo. The company is based on decades of science. The four founders, including late Prof. Aarne Halme, were the key persons from the Automation Technology Laboratory at Helsinki University of Technology (nowadays Aalto) and had more than 100 years of combined experience on field and service robotics research including Academy of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in Generic Intelligent Machines in 2008-2013 together with IHA/TUT. GIM Robotics has been recruiting the best brains in the industry. We have a team of 40+ people with some of the top robotics experts from Finland and beyond.

11th annual Mevea Seminar 2024 (24.10.2024, online, free) The theme: Real-time machine, work process, environment and sensor simulation in autonomous & assistive system development! The development of heavy machinery today faces two major challenges: decarbonization through alternative power sources and the integration of operator assistance and autonomous systems. These challenges are leading to many issues, such as longer development times, increased costs of physical prototypes, and difficulties in software and automation testing, which impact both efficiency and customer satisfaction. Learn from world-class companies (Danfoss, GIM Robotics and Siemens) how real-time simulation and virtual prototyping can transform your development processes! From integrating machine work processes, sensor models, and environmental interactions to enabling immersive testing, this free online Mevea Seminar provides you the tools to reduce costs, speed up development, and improve quality. In his presentation “Leveraging simulation to accelerate mobile machine automation development” our CTO José Luis Peralta explores how simulation tools can revolutionize mobile machine automation development. With standardized interfaces like ROS2, testing different sensor models and readily available algorithm modules becomes easy and streamlined. Join us and learn how virtual testing and real-time modelling reduce development time, enabling rapid iteration and deployment of advanced automation solutions for mobile machines. Need for a field-tested Finnish robotics SME for your EU consortium? Many of us are spending a considerable amount of time building up consortiums and struggling to meet the strict submission deadlines. It is natural to favour old friends, but sometimes we just realise that we need a particular world-class competence to enable, or to speed up, the implementation of the ambitious research agenda, not if, but when our stellar proposal is selected for funding. (A positive attitude is a necessity, as we all know.) GIM Robotics has been lucky to be a well sought after partner for both domestic and European level consortiums. During the past 16 months, we have got projects from Horizon Europe CHIPS-JU, EIT Digital, Eureka/Eurostars, NATO DIANA and most recently from European Defence Fund (EDF). Additionally, we have recently had several successful Business Finland funded national projects together with some Finnish flagship companies especially in the field of mobile work machines and field and service robotics. All of them required a considerable amount of work, but the more you do these things the better you become. So, if you have a need for a proven mobile robotics SME from Finland, with decades of experiences in sensor fusion, AI, probabilistic real-time 3D localisation and mapping, situational awareness, traversability analysis and whatnot else, together with some serious companies, look no further. Check out the attached deck illustrating our uniqueness and contact two of our EU veterans: Tatu Lyytinen for any defence related issues and Mika Vainio for the rest. Let’s talk about how we can help you to make your consortium not only a winner but stronger as well. GIM Robotics at AI Day, October 21-22, 2024 Our CTO Dr. José Luis Peralta is giving there a joint presentation with Professor Ville Kyrki, our friend and old colleague from our alma mater Aalto University. The presentation “A success story of academic and industrial cooperation” highlights our tight cooperation with Ville, and wider with Aalto, for example in EU funded and EIT Digital coordinated SPecialised Education programmes in CybersecuriTy and Robotics (SPECTRO) consortium. AI Day is an annual event organized by the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI). The largest gathering of AI researchers in the Nordics will be in October, when Finland’s eighth annual AI Day joins forces with Nordic AI Meet and the Finnish Artificial Intelligence Society. It is supported by the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). The city of Helsinki is also supporting the event by offering a city reception and the University of Helsinki by providing the conference venue. Over 500 of the brightest young minds in machine learning and artificial intelligence will converge in Helsinki. MITTA MAKES CALIBRATION ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE Finding out the extrinsic 3D calibrations and temporal offsets between the navigational sensors mounted on a mobile platform is not an easy task. It requires a highly skilled professional, who is often not a company employee. That equals high costs and delays in the initial deployment and later in the production phase if recalibration is needed. Lucky for you, GIM Robotics has a perfect solution to keep that high-paid consultant out of your premises. Web-based interface tool MITTA supports manual and data-driven calibration with intuitive 3D data visualisation views that support the validation of the calibration parameters. MITTA eats 3D LIDAR(s), IMU, Radar, Odometry, and RTK-GNSS data and outputs extrinsic calibration parameters and temporal offsets. It saves time, guarantees data quality and provides optimized solutions. The tool combines the best of both worlds; web-based interface guarantees the easy usability, and the cloud server based back-end handles the needed heavy computation.
