  • Tuomo Ilmakangas has joined our team as a Production and Installation Engineer at Luxmet Oy! Tuomo is a recent graduate with a Master's degree in Process Engineering from the University of Oulu, specializing in process metallurgy. With hands-on experience in the steel industry, including roles in production, maintenance, and research, Tuomo brings a wealth of knowledge and practical skills to our team. In his master’s thesis, Tuomo researched the effect of water vapor on the hydrogen reduction of iron pellets. The research effort was part of the FFS2 project, which Luxmet is also participating in. He is passionate about developing innovative solutions for the metallurgical industry and eager to contribute to the green steel transition.     Last week marked an important opportunity for Luxmet and the University of Oulu's doctoral researchers Henna-Riikka Putaala and Arto Rautioaho when they visited the pilot facilities at Swerim AB. Now, we're one step closer to implementing optical emission spectroscopic devices in pilot-scale furnaces, both in H2PlasmaRed Horizon Europe and HyInHeat projects.

The FFS2 project, a Business Finland-funded pioneering initiative to revolutionize the Finnish steel industry by advancing toward fossil-free steel production, has been running for a year now and has reached its halfway mark. The FFS2 project has brought together a diverse group of spearheading steel and technology companies, research institutions, and environmental consultants, all working towards creating a more sustainable future for steel production. This collaboration is essential for achieving significant CO2 emission reductions and transitioning to fossil-free steelmaking. As part of this consortium, Luxmet Oy is leveraging our expertise in real-time process control and monitoring to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of steelmaking processes. Currently, the project is steadily moving toward installing Luxmet’s latest real-time slag analysis technology in the partner companies' furnaces.
