  • Circularity. Evolved. Outokumpu’s business is based on circular economy. In 2024 we reached the same, record high level of recycled material rate as last year: Outokumpu's products are made with 95% recycled material rate, turning them into long-lasting, fully recyclable stainless steel. Circularity is truly at the heart of our business: ♻️ Accelerating circularity is a critical enabler of our stainless steel’s low carbon footprint. ♻️ High recycled material rate reduces the use of virgin resources and results in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating biodiversity loss and ♻️ Outokumpu’s mills can be considered significant recycling facilities. Just in 2024, Outokumpu recycled a total of over 2 million tonnes of recycled metals, equivalent to the weight of 321 Eiffel towers. To celebrate International Women’s Day, this week we’re highlighting a few of the women who are driving change across the steel supply chain. In Europe, gender diversity and equity in the steel industry remains a significant challenge. Last year, Outokumpu became the first stainless steelmaker to be certified by Fair Pay Workplace for its efforts to ensure sustainable 💰 fair pay across its operations. For Angelica Olsson, Safety and Sustainability Manager at Outokumpu, the ⚙️ steel industry has been the most interesting and challenging industry she has worked in. “The products we produce are fascinating,” says Angelica. “We all need to work every day to ensure that the way we produce is safe and responsible. In my role, I’m fortunate to work with a great team of engineers, enabling our mills to produce safe and sustainable stainless steel. I really feel that the work we do makes a difference.” Read more ⬇️  https://lnkd.in/drg5w6Qm #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #WomenInSteel #Steelmaking #FairPay

CBAM is moving forward, but its details will determine whether it ensures fair competition or puts European industry at a disadvantage. From Outokumpu’s perspective, CBAM is essential for securing a level playing field where European steel can compete sustainably on the global market. Martti Sassi, President of the Ferrochrome business area at Outokumpu, shared his insights in Talouselämä opinion piece, ”A Defining Moment for the Competitiveness of the Steel Industry”, highlighting the risks and opportunities of CBAM and outlines five key improvements to make it truly effective. 🔗 Read the full article (in Finnish): https://lnkd.in/efVtCfph Key takeaways from the article: ➡️ CBAM must cover the full carbon footprint – Indirect emissions (Scope 2) should be included, as excluding them puts European players at disadvantage. ➡️ It should apply to steel-intensive end products as well – If only raw steel is covered, downstream production could shift outside the EU. ➡️ Prevent loopholes – Emission-intensive steel should not be rerouted through unregulated markets. Allocation should be based on where the most value (such as steel melting) is added. ➡️ Avoid unfair default values – If actual emissions data is missing, the assumed emissions for imports must reflect real levels to prevent underreporting. ➡️ Ensure export competitiveness – Either maintain free allocations for exports or introduce rebates to keep European companies competitive in global markets. CBAM is a crucial step forward, but its effectiveness depends on the details.
