In case you didn't know, Denmark has put defense (tech) at the top of the Agenda nationally. Smaller nations like Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, can accomplish great things in a future where sovereignty depends on more things than having the biggest fleet of aircraft carriers. Superiority through intellect and motivation from the governance layer to the innovators 🦾 If it wasn't clear before, it should be today: The US won't save us.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Finnish Defence Tech Meetup in Helsinki, where over 100 innovators and investors gathered to discuss the future of defence and dual-use technology. It was inspiring to see NATO DIANA’s close partners, like VTT, actively driving forward Finland’s thriving dual-use and defence tech ecosystem. Collaborations like these are essential for advancing the innovation landscape and supporting the mission to bring transformative technologies to NATO and its allies.

How awesome is this: The Finnish company Dispelix and Collins Aerospace to collaborate on aerospace and defense technology! 🤝 The VTT spin-off Dispelix is a global leader in augmented reality (AR) waveguide display technology. 👓 Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, is an American technology company that is one of the world's largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products. 🛡 The companies have now announced a long-term supply agreement to incorporate Dispelix’s advanced AR waveguide displays into Collins Aerospace’s products. 👉 Great to see Dispelix come a long way based on the original research conducted at VTT! The announced collaboration focuses specifically on advanced near-eye and head-up displays. 😎 It can be characterized as a significant milestone in the development of advanced display technologies. Only one day to go until the (sold out!) Helsinki Defence Tech Meetup. We'll be presenting an overview of our approach to autonomy in defence, along with some fantastic other speakers from Palantir, NATO Diana and more.

Released today: a long, but necessary read for all those interested in defense market opportunities in U.S. Implementation initiatives: 1. Indo-Pacific Deterrence 2. Production and Supply Chains 3. Allied and Partner Industrial Collaboration 4. Capabilities and Infrastructure Modernization 5. New Capabilities Using Flexible Pathways 6. Intellectual Property and Data Analysis This is a deeper dive for the core elements of strategy released in early January 2024. One highlight is initiative #5 that talks about Replicator, Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve (RDER) and Flexible Acquisition Pathways. The great majority of procurement is following the full acquisition processes as before, but there are a number of tools available for a fast track when new capabilities are developed. If there is one take-away for allied nations, it has to be this: The window of opportunity is open now. Don't wait - just do it, if you were ever planning to.

🛡 €120 million funding boost to Finnish defense tech R&D 🛡 The Defense and Digital Resilience program of Business Finland will now cover the entire Finnish defense industry instead of only digital solutions (as previously). The goal of this program is to produce globally pioneering solutions for ensuring comprehensive security and resilience in societies. 🔐 With the €120 million extra injection into the program's funding, it is possible to support the development of Finnish defense industry ecosystems and meet the needs of national defense even faster. 🇫🇮 Examples of these ecosystems are the leading company projects from Patria, Bittium, and Nokia, as well as the Digital Defence Ecosystem, all funded by Business Finland. The major €120 million boost is intended to increase particularly the R&D activities of SMEs and growth companies. 📈 The goal of the Defense and Digital Resilience program is seamless cooperation among various stakeholders, including Tesi, VTT, Huoltovarmuuskeskus, Puolustusvoimat - Försvarsmakten - Finnish Defence Forces, Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto Traficom / Transport- och kommunikationsverket Traficom, PIA - Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries, Finnish Information Security Cluster (FISC) - Kyberala ry, Critical Communications Finland, and regional development companies.
