Polycotton, a mix of polyester and cotton, poses a significant recycling challenge due to the difficulty in separating the fibres for reuse, especially back into textile fibres. We, at PESCO-UP, wanted to tackle this issue♻ PESCO-UP partner Nordic Bioproducts Group Ltd’s technology facilitates the separation of cellulose and synthetic materials from mixed polycotton textile waste and modifies the cellulose for use as a valuable raw material in the production of new textiles. PESCO-UP is scaling up this technology, marking a significant step towards widespread implementation 🚀 Currently, as part of the PESCO-UP project, Nordic Bioproducts Group successfully produced new regenerated cellulose textile fibres from 100% polycotton waste-derived cellulose. While the development is still at the lab scale, the results are promising. Learn more ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e_DdKhRY

Textile Manufacturing
Upcycling Mixed Textile Waste into Clean Materials for the Next Use Cycle
About us
The ambition of PESCO-UP is to transform the textile recycling industry by creating new raw materials from mixed wastes. It addresses the circularity across the textile recycling value chain, and reduces the industry dependency on virgin materials. As the objective is to ensure the full circularity of the outcomes and encourage collaboration between industry stakeholders, technologies tested during the PESCO-UP project cover all the textile recycling processes throughout the value chain. PESCO-UP is a Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Union. It started on 1 January 2024 and will last for 48 months. It receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No. 101138367.

Last week, at the #ECOSYSTEXConference in Milan, our project partner Traci Kinden from TEXroad presented the latest developments from PESCO-UP. Traci updated the participants on the latest proposed minimum data requirements for recycling, focusing on the significance of feedstock data. She also explored multi-purpose data flows, demonstrating how robust data systems can help align supply and demand within the textile recycling marketplace. The presentation highlighted the critical role of transparent data exchange in meeting precise material specifications and streamlining recycling operations.

We’ve just wrapped up an incredible two-day #ECOSYSTEXconference in Milan, Italy, where industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers came together to discuss the final results of 4 European projects - TRICK Project, HEREWEAR, my-fi and SCIRT Project - and more broadly the role of EU research in creating a sustainable circular textile supply chains 🧵🌍 We were honoured to start the event with updates from the European Commission on the latest regulations, including the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, and Horizon Europe opportunities for 2025-2027. The conference then featured not only interactive sessions on digital product passports, sustainable materials, and circular business models. The engaging discussions, throughout the workshops, panels and exhibition, sparked lively debates on how to advance circularity in textiles, from bio-based materials to local manufacturing models. The conference wrapped up with an exclusive tour of Accenture Customer Innovation Network, and with a visit of Decathlon 's warehouse in Basiano, where participants got to eye-witness innovative and circular solutions. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to not only all the speakers and attendees for their invaluable contributions, but to our partners Sistema Moda Italia, Accenture and UniCredit for their support. Finally, we are grateful to TRICK Project, HEREWEAR, my-fi and SCIRT Project for showcasing their results on textile traceability, eco-design, and biofabrication, highlighting how technology and creativity are reshaping the industry. Stay tuned on the ECOSYSTEX LinkedIn page to receive the latest news and update about the community and its 40+ project members!
