Reusing precast concrete for a circular economy
About us
International ReCreate project aims to discover how used concrete elements can be deconstructed without damaging them to be reused in new buildings – and turn the process into a profitable business. The four-year project has received €12.5 million of funding under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 958200. 📣Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg and P. Jähne are busy working on a new ReCreate pilot project. In Kolkwitz near Cottbus, the local sports club plans to build a new storage and training building as well as a new ticket office from reused concrete elements. The application for the building permit will be submitted very soon! #Horizon2020 #precastconcrete #reuse

👉 In our latest interview, we talk with Kjartan Gudmundsson, Associate Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and leader of WP3 in the ReCreate project, about the role of digital supply chain management and information sharing in construction. Kjartan discusses how WP3 is working on digital models of concrete elements to improve data transparency and streamline supply chain processes. He also shares insights into the use of RFID technology and the development of a Common Data Environment (CDE) to support sustainability and resource efficiency in the industry. 📣 For a closer look at how these innovations are contributing to the future of construction, check out the full interview. #digitalconstruction #supplychain #sustainability #recreateproject #horizon2020 #precastconcrete https://lnkd.in/d89JvAMa

👏 In late May, KTH School of Architecture student Arnaldur Bragi Jakobsson presented his Master’s Degree Project in Architecture entitled “Second wind - Reuse of prefabricated concrete elements from obsolete buildings in new construction”. Arnaldur’s project explores how a new rowhouse typology can be designed using reused precast concrete panels from deconstructed multifamily housing buildings at Drottninghög in Helsingborg. “We have been very happy to support Arnuldur’s project within ReCreate. He is a visionary young architect who now understands the potential, complexity, and impact of reuse,” says Erik Stenberg, Swedish Country Cluster Leader and Arnaldur’s supervisor. Last autumn, we had the privilege to host an original builder of the Finnish donor building on the #deconstruction site. Mr. Pekka Korpela was the foreman responsible for the precast #concrete assembly. He shared interesting details about the construction. Thank you for visiting! #Horizon2020 #finnishcluster #circularconstruction

🔍 Why is the Tampereen kaupunki - City of Tampere involved in the ReCreate project? Tommi Halonen, the project manager, provides insight in a recent blog. 📢 Cities play a key role in advancing the circular economy. In Tampere's case, this means developing public processes that enable the reuse of building materials and creating incentives for companies to adopt circular practices. Through initiatives like sustainable public procurement and circular plot handovers, Tampere is helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future. 🟣 This blog highlights the important part cities play in supporting the transition to a circular economy. https://lnkd.in/dhyGJAKD #circulareconomy #sustainablecities #Horizon2020 #Tampere #Finland

The salvaged elements from the second donor building in Großräschen (Germany) have been stored in Kolkwitz and investigated by Prof. Angelika Mettke and her students from architecture as well as civil engineering from Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg. A TV documentation team of 3Sat accompanied this “hands-on excursion”. The release of this short TV production is expected in autumn 2024. #Horizon2020 #circularconstruction #civilengineering #architecture #germany #recreateproject #3Sat

🆕 We're excited to share the latest advancements in circular construction from the ReCreate project. This month, in collaboration with Lagemaat Sloopwerken B.V. and the Dutch cluster, Eindhoven University of Technology is testing concrete elements from the Prinsenhof pilot at Lagemaat's Heerde site. The research aims to assess the reusability of these elements, crucial for reducing raw material use and CO2 emissions. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dSFnf9Ps

Reclaimed precast #concrete elements, salvaged from our Finnish #deconstruction pilot, were tested at @civileng_TAU laboratory. Loading the beams to the breakage point in the lab helps to determine design values for safe #reuse, including a hefty safety margin. #circularconstruction #Horizon2020
