📚Linnea Harala and Lauri Alkki from Tampere University are exploring different approaches to concrete element reuse in #ReCreate project. 🏗 There are two models shaping business potential. The centralized model involves a single key actor managing all phases of deconstruction and reuse, while the decentralized model, employs multiple specialized actors. Reusing precast concrete for a circular economy
About us
International ReCreate project aims to discover how used concrete elements can be deconstructed without damaging them to be reused in new buildings – and turn the process into a profitable business. The four-year project has received €12.5 million of funding under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 958200. 🔄 Reusing Structural Concrete for a Greener Future 🌍 Check out the latest blog series with Lina Brülls, a graduate architect and Master's student in the Computer Science Program at Chalmers University of Technology, exploring how informed design processes can enhance the reuse of structural concrete elements. By rethinking materials, we are moving towards more sustainable and circular construction practices in the building industry. 🌍 New research from the Horizon 2020 ReCreate project is out! The paper, "Embodied carbon saving of reusing concrete elements in new buildings: A Swedish pilot study" is now available on Science Direct. Key takeaways: 🔄 Reusing concrete elements can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions in new buildings. 🏢 Case study of a Swedish pilot project that implemented this approach. 📊 Comparison between reuse strategies and conventional business models. 🌍 Tackling the challenges in climate assessment for circular economy practices. Check out how this research is paving the way for a greener future. ⬇ #sustainability #circulareconomy #recreateproject #Horizon2020 #SwedishCC 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dqAUawAG

📏To ensure size accuracy, the Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg team went to the Kolkwitz intermediate storage site and took detailed measurements of the reclaimed precast concrete elements waiting to be reused in the new buildings for the local sports club. 🤸♀️ ✅Most of the elements were within the allowed tolerances, but a very small number of elements showed significant deviations from the dimensions given in the historic plans. 📑 📐The design for the pilot project was updated accordingly.💪 #btu #kolkwitz #storage #reuse #precastconcrete #sportsclub #circularconstruction #recreateproject #Horizon2020

👉 Björn Ravemark, Christine Delander Eksten, Tina Appelqvist, and Caroline Wedelsbäck, the ReCreate Swedish Country Cluster project group from Helsingborgshem, joined the two day conference “Återbruksträff” arranged by Sveriges Allmännytta in Gothenburg at the end of September, 2024. 🌐 👌 They collected lots of good examples of reuse, made new friends, and shared knowledge and experience from ReCreate in the Swedish municipal housing context and with representatives from the construction industry. 💡 They listened with extra attention to industry colleagues who are testing reuse of precast concrete elements, specifically 3000 square meters of hollow core slabs, from one of IKEA’s shopping centers that has been dismantled in 2023. 🏗 🏨 These hollow core slabs are to be reused for 66 new apartments in Kv. Återbruket, a new apartment complex in Gothenburg. Right now, the dismantled concrete elements are in storage, awaiting a transport to the Kv. Återbruket site at the planned start of construction in 2025. 🚧 #ikea #reuse #precastconcrete #hollowcoreslabs #sweden #swedishcc #recreateproject #Horizon2020

📣ReCreate's researchers gathered in Eindhoven from the 26th to 27th of September to exchange updates on the latest project progress. 📌The meeting, hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology and country cluster leader Simon Wijte, brought together researchers from all four universities participating in the project: Eindhoven University, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Tampere University. 💪These meetings provide a valuable boost to the researchers' work and foster fruitful discussions, bringing important conclusions to light. We always look forward to these opportunities! #research #recreateproject #horizon2020 #precastconcrete #circularconstruction

💡 The latest research by experts from KTH (Arlind Dervishaj, Tove Malmqvist, Johan Silfwerbrand, Kjartan Gudmundsson), published in the Journal of Building Engineering, explores the reuse of concrete from existing buildings. Through digital building models, they assess the remaining service life, CO2 uptake via carbonation, and the embodied carbon savings achieved through reuse. 🏦 The workflow was tested in a building from the 1960s, demonstrating high reuse potential. 👉 Their findings respond to the RILEM recommendation for revising carbonation rates in standards like EN 16757:2022. 👌 Reusing concrete can significantly reduce a building’s embodied carbon. The study is part of the EU-funded ReCreate project at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. #KTH #ReCreateproject #H2020 #precastconcrete #reuse #circularconstruction
