Great news! 🏆 We have received the OLADE 2024 Energy Excellence Award in the Technology for Decarbonization category. The award was announced last week at the IX Energy Week in Asunción, Paraguay. 🌟 The Energía del Pacífico plant in El Salvador, which generates 30% of the country's electrical capacity, exemplifies our engine solutions. It has reduced dependence on imported fuel oil, created jobs, and decreased approximately 600,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Selected from over 70 applications, this award highlights our commitment to the energy transition. Our Vice President Frederic Carron expressed gratitude to Deputy Minister Long Nguyen Hoang, PhD and the Ministry of Industry and Trade for their time and engaging discussions surrounding our proposed 300 MW flexible power plant project utilising reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) technology. This project aims to replace an existing coal power facility, with the capability to switch to hydrogen in the future, and support the grid in integrating renewable energy through its high-degree of flexibility.

In the 90s, the Maldives State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO) serviced just a handful of properties in the island’s capital, Malé. Today, both Malé and Hulhumalé benefit from reliable power generation, with 14 of the 16 large-bore and medium-speed engines in operation supplied by Wärtsilä. Our partnership began in 1990 with the installation of Wärtsilä’s first engines in Malé. Now, we proudly deliver around 90 MW of generating capacity. Through continuous upgrades, training, and remote support, our lifecycle services have played a key role in ensuring STELCO’s operations remain efficient, reliable, and sustainable. Together, we’ve navigated challenges, from modernization efforts to grid balancing for renewable energy integration. Our engine technology can deliver future-proof power solutions that make a huge contribution towards decarbonised operations. 📊 As utilities increase the utilisation of renewable energy assets, such as wind and solar, opportunities exist to produce hydrogen for long-term energy storage from excess renewable energy. ️⚡️ POWER magazine recently outlined the landscape of hydrogen adoption in U.S. gas power plants, and noted our successful tests using a 25% hydrogen blend in an unmodified Wärtsilä 50SG reciprocating internal combustion engine to supply power to the grid. 👀 Amongst other sustainable fuels, hydrogen will be critical to reaching net zero emissions - yet today's global energy industry is not built for the adoption of pure hydrogen as a secure power source.
