  • Meet Marita Agigo, one of eight pleaders from Nauru, who recently visited Fiji on an exchange program with local law firms and the Fiji Legal Aid Commission. Marita felt incredibly fortunate to be a part of an initiative led by the Nauru Law Society. “The opportunity to observe the judicial system in Fiji compared to Nauru was invaluable. Attending court sessions with the firm allowed me to witness firsthand the professionalism and proactive approach of the lawyers there. They skilfully used case laws and precedents, showcasing a level of practice that inspired me deeply,” she said. Marita believes that with more opportunities such as this exchange program, the Nauru legal fraternity will elevate the standard of legal practice in the country in order to better serve the community. “I returned home with a wealth of knowledge and insights that I am eager to share with my colleagues. The experience highlighted the importance of practical training, and I have made several recommendations for future programs as well such as a mock session that would provide with opportunity to practice using the correct legal terms.”

Our Resident Representative, Munkhtuya Altangerel, has hailed the Reserve Bank of Fiji’s work on expanding access to parametric insurance and digital finance services that led to it winning the prestigious Nestor Espenilla Jr. Financial Inclusion Innovation Award last month. Speaking at an event to celebrate the win yesterday, Ms Altangerel said: “This is not just a victory for Fiji, but for the entire Pacific region — a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and determination to leave no one behind.” The UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) have supported the RBF with various initiatives since 2007. Most recently, the two agencies have partnered with the central bank through the Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme and the Pacific Digital Economy Programme. “The commitment shown by the Reserve Bank of Fiji has paved the way for a new era of inclusive growth, where financial services are accessible, affordable, and transformative for all,” Ms Altangerel added.

  • Fiji's Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with UN agencies in Fiji, are in Nadi for a two-day workshop to streamline visa processes and immigration services. The collaboration aims to enhance border management through innovative solutions and improved inter-agency cooperation, benefiting both citizens and visitors to Fiji and the Pacific region. As a regional hub, Fiji’s strengthened procedures will not only enhance national services but also contribute to regional development by supporting UN agencies to serve the wider Pacific region. Coordinating agencies, UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji and the IOM - UN Migration are working alongside government officials and key stakeholders to ensure more efficient and transparent immigration services for both Fiji citizens and foreign nationals.

This was a key message delivered on Day 1️⃣ of Fiji's first National Plastic Symposium, the event delivered alongside UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Fiji Government. The three-day event brings together key stakeholders from across the region to chart our course toward beating plastic pollution.

  • The Strengthening Gender Machinery Project in the Federated States of Micronesia is empowering rural women like the Tomil Women Association (TWA) in Yap State by providing enhanced access to farming technology, including tractors, lawn mowers, shredders, and essential supplies. These tools are vital for increasing agricultural productivity and sustainable food production. By leveraging technology, rural women are playing a critical role in ensuring food security and advancing toward #ZeroHunger. The TWA’s success demonstrates how community-driven initiatives, paired with the right resources, can transform lives, and contribute to sustainable development.

  • As we celebrate International Day for Rural Women today, we thank our rural women for their hard-work as their efforts nourish, sustain and inspire us all. In the Pacific, women are at the center of rural life, their contributions not only vital for local food systems, but for achieving broader development goals such as poverty reduction, gender equality, and climate resilience. In collaboration with governments across the Pacific, development partners and civil society organizations, the UN Development Programme has been a key player in empowering rural women to lead in these efforts.
