Our 'Seeing is Believing' tour continued last week with a visit to neustark’s site in #Zürich, where we observed firsthand their carbon removal technology, designed to support more sustainable practices in construction. “At CarbonX, we encourage Corporate Buyers to witness firsthand carbon removal technologies deployed in the field. CDR Buyers play a pivotal role in providing necessary market commitment to these solutions, which in turn play a critical role in a corporate net zero journey". - Megan Hunold, Head of Partnerships, CarbonX Climate. Neustark, utilising mineralisation technology, works with biogas plants to capture and liquefy CO₂, transporting it to concrete partners for sequestration. Through an accelerated mineralisation process, Neustark injects CO₂ into demolished concrete, where it mineralises into limestone within the concrete granules. This process seeks to both sequester CO₂ and strengthen concrete, addressing key sustainability aspects within construction. Our visit highlighted the applications of this approach, reinforcing the value of firsthand insight as we collectively pursue measurable impacts toward net-zero targets. A lot of sweat (and nearly tears) has finally paid off ! 💡 Excited to release our new paper, "Demystifying Biomass CDR: A Roadmap for Sustainable Biomass Sourcing", after extensive research and interviews of renown experts in the field 🔍 Hopefully this will help to increase transparency on this (very) complex topic and kickstart interesting discussions with passionate people in the space
Biomass Carbon Removal: A Roadmap for Sustainable Biomass Sourcing As we work toward achieving net-zero emissions, biomass-based carbon dioxide removal (biomass-CDR) has become a cornerstone of climate strategy and is currently the leading CDR pathway. However, with increasing competition for biomass from the bioenergy and biomaterial industries, it is vital to determine which biomass types are best suited for CDR, how to avoid displacing them from higher-priority uses, and how to minimise potential environmental and social impacts. So, what safeguards should buyers consider when purchasing carbon removal credits from biomass-CDR projects? At CarbonX Climate, we advocate for a thorough assessment of the biomass's counterfactual scenario and potential market leakage. Achieving the right balance between carbon removal goals and sustainable land use is essential for maximising the potential of biomass in #CDR. Establishing strong baseline conditions is complex and highly context-dependent, varying by region and evolving over time, which requires ongoing reassessment in response to market changes. Download the full report here: https://lnkd.in/efdU-TMq or head to our blog to read more: https://lnkd.in/eHcQrTJt Thank you to our dedicated reviewers for their meticulous and thoughtful feedback: Neil H. (Isometric), Fabiano Ximenes (NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development) and Robert Brown (Iowa State University). #CarbonRemoval #BiomassCDR #CarbonX #Sustainability #NetZero

We had an incredible experience at Climate Week NYC by Climate Group —both energising and exhausting in the best way! It was great to meet many of our partners in person after months (and sometimes years) of virtual collaboration. What better location to have the global CDR community come together in one place! A key highlight was co-hosting a dinner with Andes, bringing together a wonderful group of partners to celebrate the week.
