Many thanks to International Methane Emissions Observatory for their support of the @cedigaz seminar and to Monika Oczkowska for her invaluable contribution to the discussion.

🆕 Recently, IMEO's Monika Oczkowska joined Cedigaz for a panel on "Galvanizing the Industry to Take Meaningful Action Against Methane Emissions." Key topics included: ➡️ The rapid abatement of methane across natural gas and LNG operations, which is essential for demonstrating the sector's ability to manage its climate footprint and preserving it social license to operate. ➡️ How governments, civil society, and companies have prioritized reducing methane emissions from natural gas and LNG operations, allocating over US $1 billion to support initiatives to #CutMethane. 💡 UN Environment Programme's IMEO has an essential role providing credible data to unlock climate action in this growing ecosystem of stakeholders working on methane. Its mission of providing open, reliable, and actionable methane data is crucial for enabling transparency and accountability. 💡A core pillar of this work is the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0), which is the only comprehensive, measurement-based reporting framework for the oil and gas industry. The Partnership already encompasses 40% of global oil and gas production and over 70% of LNG flows, but we need the entire industry to commit to transparency and accountability in order to meet the methane moment. 🌐 **Views from the Cedigaz 2024 Seminar: Shifting the Focus on Gas Demand, Hard Truths, and Bolder Advocacy** Pragmatism, optionality, and communication were the central themes at Cedigaz's annual seminar in Paris on June 20th. The seminar highlighted the critical need for these elements to ensure long-term planning, energy security, and a just energy transition. More than two years post the energy crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the industry faces numerous challenges: deteriorating global economics, industrial demand destruction, geopolitical instability, climate change imperatives, and Europe's need to enhance economic competitiveness. **Key Discussions:** - **Political Uncertainty:** Delegates noted that while Europe avoided major blackouts, the socio-economic impacts were significant. The ongoing energy crisis, initially sparked by structural supply-demand imbalances, remains unresolved, underscoring the importance of effective governance and policy. - **Shifting Supply and Demand:** Europe's gas demand saw a significant decline in 2023, driven by various factors, including milder winters and increased renewable energy capacity. The seminar stressed the need for Europe to enhance its industrial competitiveness in light of these shifts. - **High Prices:** The European Index TTF experienced a dramatic drop, yet volatility persists. With growing LNG demand and supply risks, price stability remains uncertain. - **What Worked:** The flexibility offered by LNG was recognized, with increased investments in regas capacity and long-term commercial partnerships. However, concerns about the financial viability of new infrastructure projects remain. - **Who Will Pay?:** The high costs associated with ensuring energy security were discussed, with a call for greater cross-border infrastructure investment despite economic and political challenges. - **Fuel Neutrality:** The seminar emphasized the need for a pragmatic, fuel-neutral approach to global climate and energy policy, with clear pathways and targets for gas as a transition fuel. - **Public Funding and Low-Carbon Initiatives:** There was a consensus on the need for greater public funding and clearer policies to support hydrogen and low-carbon LNG projects, alongside initiatives to decarbonize LNG operations. The seminar concluded with a call for the gas industry to enhance its communication efforts and self-examination, acknowledging the need for the sector to lead in tackling climate change while ensuring energy security. 🔗 **Read the full article.** https://lnkd.in/eBsnEFY8 #EnergyTransition #GasIndustry #EnergySecurity #CedigazSeminar #LNG #ClimateChange #Hydrogen #Policy #Infrastructure Tatiana Mitrova Anne-Sophie Corbeau Andrea Qualiano Maria Sicilia Laurent David Andrea Stegher Wayne Bryan Didier Holleaux Christophe McGlade Armelle Lecarpentier Jenny Kelly Gavin Sutcliffe

President at Eurogas - EVP at ENGIE Group

Keynote speech at the annual CEDIGAZ seminar. On Thursday June 20th, I was invited to deliver a speech in chateau de Longchamps for the annual seminar of the Cedigaz members. The presentation was entitled « What lessons can we learn from the management of the gas crisis in Europe since 2021? » and I addressed the successes as well as the failures. More importantly, I mentioned some questions (for instance « did the gas market work properly during the crisis? ») which remain controversial and should be further debated in order to be better prepared for the next crisis, or some actions which remain to be taken (like establishing a new reference scenario for the European energy mix, taking into account the Russian war in Ukraine) to manage the transition. The gas industry, as well as the EU and national authorities cannot afford to be complacent, and a lot remains to be done if we want to manage the next crisis in a better way than this one. Thanks to Cedigaz for their invitation
