📢 Exciting news and a major achievement for animal welfare and for the advancement of modern in vitro approaches for pyrogenicity testing! 📢 At its 179th session in June 2024, the European Pharmacopoeia (#PhEur) Commission adopted 57 revised texts from which the rabbit pyrogen test #RPT has been deleted, together with a new general chapter on Pyrogenicity (5.1.13), marking the end of the RPT era in the Ph. Eur. By 1 July 2025, the use of #RPT will no longer be required, and medicine developers will need to select suitable in vitro tests, such as the monocyte-activation test, to control the pyrogenicity of their product, based on a risk assessment as described in the new general chapter. #OnThisDay in 1964, the convention on the elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia was opened for signature. It’s the legal text at the origin of the #EuropeanPharmacopoeia – the single reference work for the quality control of medicines in Europe. The first edition of the European Pharmacopoeia consisted of 120 texts. Today, in its 11th edition, it contains around 3 000, while the countries involved have grown from the initial handful to the current 39 plus the European Union.
