“We will not stop until Russia is held fully accountable and justice is done.” The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset welcomes a major step towards creating a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. “Last April, we opened a Register of Damage for those affected by Russia’s aggression and work on a compensation mechanism is now well under way. Furthermore, the European Court of Human Rights is still dealing with over 4,000 cases against Russia related to events in Crimea, Donbas and the wider war in Ukraine.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/egPkDehH #StandWithUkraine #RD4U #OneEurope

The Parliamentary Assembly gives green light to new Council of Europe treaty which protects the profession of lawyer This Convention requires states to protect lawyers in various ways, allowing them to practise without fear of discrimination or interference. The Assembly highlights the increasing threats faced by lawyers and emphasises the need for a legally binding instrument to enhance their protection. Taking part in the #PACEwinter2025 debate, the Attorney-General for England and Wales Lord Hermer also welcomed the convention: “This will rightly send a strong signal that the international community takes seriously the independence of the legal profession and the right of lawyers to practise free of interference and harassment. Our collective legal systems work best in circumstances where advocates are able to take their own cases without fear or favour and represent clients irrespective of their own views as to what the client did.” Read the opinion and watch the debate: https://lnkd.in/e7rKvsi7 #Law #HumanRights

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation, a solemn ceremony was held today at the Council of Europe. PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos and Secretary General Alain Berset opened the event, followed by a moving testimony from Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, the youngest survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp and President of the Yad Vashem Memorial. Affectionately called "Lulek" by his parents and being only 7 years old, he was sent to Buchenwald and separated from his mother. He vividly recalls the moment she waved at him for the last time. The ceremony ended with a moment of reflection and wreath-laying at the Holocaust memorial on the forecourt of the Palais de l’Europe. #HolocaustRemembrance #WeRemember #NeverForget
