On this #WorldHabitatDay, we’re reminded of the urgent need to protect our environments from the spread of #microplastics. It’s been 20 years since scientists first identified microplastics—and now they’re everywhere: in the water, air, food, wildlife, and human bodies. With the final #PlasticsTreaty negotiations approaching in November, it’s time to recognize the scale of this issue and commit to decisive action. https://lnkd.in/eDnXHSiD

🌊 Sea-level rise is one of the most pressing challenges facing our world. Today, a high-level UN meeting is addressing the existential threats posed by rising seas. Adelle Thomas, a member of the ISC #SIDS committee and expert contributor to the ISC policy brief on #SeaLevelRise, will be attending and participating as a panelist. ➡️ Through the ISC's network, renowned scientists from diverse regions and disciplines have highlighted key considerations for policy-makers on a wide range of issues related to sea-level rise: https://lnkd.in/e8fAqaHb 🔵 Sea-level rise (SLR) is a global issue that impacts differently on different communities, with some considerably more vulnerable than others. 🔵 SLR is accelerating and will continue for centuries under all emission scenarios. However, decisions made today can impact the timing and degree of SLR, with significant consequences for centuries to come. 🔵 Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific inputs provide crucial benefits to successful policy-making on mitigation, adaptation, finance, and resilience related to SLR. This requires a more systematic dialogue between policy-makers and scientists on evidence-based policy options to support concrete action and anticipate future risks. #ScienceForPolicy #ClimateAction

In his address, he noted the dual necessity of aligning nations' domestic interests with global cooperation, highlighting the critical role of science diplomacy in addressing both domestic and international challenges. "Science diplomacy can [serve a nation’s interests] in domains such as security, trade, environmental management and technology access. But it must also be recognized by governments that it is in every nation’s interest to advance the global commons."
