During my meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis, we discussed the importance of safeguarding human dignity and promoting human rights, as well as tackling challenges related to poverty, social exclusion, and migration. We also touched on the war in Ukraine, with a particular focus on the plight of abducted children. We agreed that European cooperation and solidarity are essential in addressing these pressing issues. His Holiness expressed appreciation for the work of PACE in the field of migration. Julian Assange, addressing a PACE hearing today in Strasbourg, told parliamentarians: "I pleaded guilty to journalism". Speaking for the first time since his release, and ahead of a PACE plenary debate tomorrow on his case, he said: "It’s good to be back. PACE has today elected Alain Berset, a former President of the Swiss Confederation, as Secretary General of the Council of Europe for a five-year term beginning on 18 September 2024. In the second round of the election, Mr Berset obtained 114 votes, a majority of the votes cast. The other candidates, Indrek Saar (Estonia) and Didier Reynders (Belgium) obtained 85 votes and 46 votes respectively. More details: https://lnkd.in/ema-BXXe
