📣 A highly interesting study has been published recently by Rime Bioinformatics, corporate member of PhageEU, on “High-Performance Genome Annotation for a Safer and Faster-Developing #Phage Therapy”. Antoine Culot, Guillaume Abriat and Kieran P. Furlong compare manual annotation (SEA-PHAGES) with their own pipeline. The comparison shows that:  🔸 Manual annotation remains slightly better for structural annotation (gene-calling), but has minimal impact on functional annotation; 🔸 rTOOLS outperforms in functional annotation; 🔸 Overall, the results are very similar : rTOOLS is the first automated pipeline to match human expert-level performance in phage genome annotation. [NEW ARTICLE ON OUR TECHNOLOGY]💡 Phage therapy is a promising alternative in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, but ensuring its safety requires high-quality genome annotation. Traditionally, manual annotation has been the gold standard—accurate but slow and resource-intensive. The scientific community has developed great tools—such as Pharokka—to quickly generate annotation results, but none of the current solutions fully match the accuracy of manual genome annotation. Our latest research compares manual annotation (SEA-PHAGES) with the automated rTOOLS (RimeTOOLS) pipeline from Rime Bioinformatics. The results? ✅ Manual annotation still has an edge in structural annotation (gene-calling), but its impact on functional annotation is minimal. ✅ rTOOLS delivers superior functional annotation. ✅ rTOOLS is the first automated pipeline to perform at a level comparable to that of a human phage genome expert. Yesterday, I was at the European Parliament for an inspiring discussion on “The Potential of #Bacteriophages in Fighting #AMR”. Grateful to see policymakers, researchers, and industry working together to tackle one of the greatest health challenges of our time!
