With the rapid global shift towards renewable energy and the increasing demand for green minerals, Africa’s mining frameworks must adapt to emerging opportunities and challenges. The African Mining Vision (AMV) and African Minerals Governance Framework (AMGF), both over a decade old, are being reviewed to ensure they remain relevant in addressing Africa’s needs in this evolving landscape. At the Multi-Stakeholder Workshop held in Addis Ababa on September 12-13, 2024, ACEP joined key stakeholders to contribute to this crucial review, sharing insights on strengthening the governance of Africa’s mineral resources for sustainable development. While the AMV has driven conversations on value addition and increased economic rents from Africa's mineral resources, localisation of the AMV among member countries remains a challenge due to the limited political will to follow through on the AMV action plans. The AMGF assessment questions need to refocus on measuring implementation successes beyond the checkboxes of reforms in legal frameworks. ACEP is committed to fostering robust policies that ensure the sustainable governance of Africa’s mineral resources, advocating for practical reforms that go beyond frameworks to deliver real impact across the continent. #ACEP African Union Benjamin Boakye, Ali Eliasu Photo credit: African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC)

Partook in the Future of Energy Conference (FEC 2024), organized by the great team at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) and its partners a few weeks ago. The event brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss innovative strategies and solutions for Africa's energy future. The thematic topics and panel discussions were great, as was the pitch by the young entrepreneurs (my highlight of the event). I participated in two side events: The first was organised by Alaka Lugonzo of Global Witness with Marit Y. Kitaw, Charles G. Ofori and I as discussants on mineral value chains, beneficiation and communities. Separately, Matthew Tyce and I also organised a side event on “Industrial Policy Priorities For Ghana In A Context Of The Energy Transition” with a great panel comprising Priscilla Twumasi Baffour Kwame Jantuah, Charles G. Ofori, Eugene Sangmortey and Doris Edem Agbevivi. Thanks to ACEP, KCL, and the University of Aberdeen for making this happen. It is always a pleasure to catch up with colleagues working in the continent's energy and natural resources sector in academia, industry, civil society, and policymaking. Ethanol has the potential to drive widespread clean cooking adoption across Africa, but its opportunities remain largely untapped. Moderating a session on the sidelines of the 2024 Future of Energy Conference with diverse stakeholders from industry, government and advocacy groups in Ghana and Kenya was insightful. Kenya has made a lot of progress, where 1.2 million households use ethanol, aiming for 30% adoption by 2028. Despite the differing perspectives, these were cross cutting challenges, limited access to funding, feedstock issues, limited regulations, and high import dependency. As next steps, speakers recommended conducting nationwide feedstock assessments, earmarking land for energy crops, and linking agribusinesses with ethanol producers. The Africa Centre for Energy Policy is committed to promoting meaningful economic participation of local population in clean cooking adoption. In 2021, the Centre launched its ethanol for clean cooking campaign as part of efforts to provide affordable clean cooking solutions to build climate resilience and adaptation among rural and peri-urban households who are heavily reliant on polluting charcoal and wood fuels as their primary source of cooking fuels. The project also aims at creating alternative livelihoods in the ethanol value chain for local population dependent on the wood fuels for income, largely women. In partnership with Oxfam, the Centre piloted a study and is currently undertaking studies in ethanol feedstock and working with research institutions for local production of ethanol based cookstoves tailored for the average Ghanaian household. Thank you Charles G. Ofori for leading this project and my esteemed panelists Dr. Faith Wandera-Odongo PAULA EDZE PRINCE ESSEL Mohammed Aminu Lukumanu Daniel Tugli #FEC2024 #CleanCooking #SustainableEnergy #EthanolSolutions
