Join our roundtable at #ClimateWeekNYC to discuss how to bring equity in global mineral supply chains. 🗓️Monday 23rd 3:15pm 📍White Space Chelsea, 530 W 25th St Register here👉https://lnkd.in/dXgfnzFm There is a fierce scramble underway for the minerals which will build the cleaner energy systems and technology of the future. Many low-income countries that host these minerals export them in raw form, missing the opportunity to add greater value to their economies. Higher income countries are jostling to secure more minerals to profit from the energy transition and build their cleaner energy systems. Stick around after for a Global Witness panel discussion and a drinks reception with Global Witness and SOMO. This roundtable organised by SOMO Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ZELA and PWYP will explore solutions to these pressing challenges by: → focusing on promoting local value addition and equitable economic participation for resource-rich countries → encouraging responsible resource use by wealthy nations that prioritise environmental and social well-being, and → addressing trade barriers between producer and consumer countries that reinforce inequities in global mineral supply chains. With Dr Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD, Executive Director of PWYP Mutuso Dhliwayo, Executive Director of ZELA Alejandro Gonzalez, Senior Researcher at SOMO

About us
Publish What You Pay (PWYP) is a global coalition of civil society organisations united in their call for an open and accountable extractive sector, so that oil, gas and mining revenues improve the lives of women, men and youth in resource-rich countries and that extraction is carried out in a responsible manner that benefits countries and their citizens.

The UN's new guidelines on critical minerals are a positive step, but unlocking Africa’s 🌍 potential requires more. Fair trade, responsible mining ⛏️, and local value addition are key for a just energy transition ⚡. Read more in this op-ed by Mutuso Dhliwayo at Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ZELA in Context Newsroom below ⬇ #JustMinerals
⛏ This week, the United Nations took an important step when it published global principles to guide the effort for fairness and benefit - sharing in the scramble for transition minerals - the materials essential for building clean energy technologies like batteries, solar panels, and electric vehicles. As the world accelerates toward a greener future, the countries sitting on these mineral deposits must see a fair share of benefits. This is an encouraging moment, signalling global recognition of the need for responsible mining practices and the protection of vulnerable communities. ✍️ Mutuso Dhliwayo, lawyer for Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association and member of Publish What You Pay writes for Context. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEzi9HNq

🌍 Upcoming Webinar On September 17 at 10AM GMT, join our webinar to discuss the role of civil society in unlocking value in Africa's transition minerals! Register here: https://lnkd.in/eaDZUwZg Africa possesses a significant share of the world’s transition minerals, crucial for the shift to sustainable energy. However, the continent often exports these minerals for processing, missing out on substantial economic benefits. This webinar will draw from PWYP's recent research findings (see here: https://lnkd.in/eauwm6r8) and bring outstanding panelists to discuss how Africa can leverage its resources more effectively, and the pivotal role that civil society can play in this transformation. With: - Marit Y. Kitaw from African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) - Davie Malungisa from SOUTHERN AFRICA RESOURCE WATCH - Mutuso Dhliwayo from Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ZELA - Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD from PWYP Languages: French & English with interpretation #JustMineralsAfrica

📢 The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals has called for global action rooted in equity and justice. The final report has laid out principles and recommendations to create urgently necessary change in mineral supply chains: 🌍 It says that “human rights must be at the core of all mineral value chains,” and calls on all actors to protect human rights and Indigenous Peoples' rights. 🌍 It recognises that we must protect the planet’s integrity, “redouble our efforts to safeguard the integrity of the environment” and reduce consumption to protect the planet. 🌍It acknowledges that trade rules need to change so mineral-producing developing countries can benefit more from their resources. Crucially, the Panel recognises that justice requires change. 📢 We now need strong collective action to put these ambitions into practice: inclusive, multi-stakeholder action that heeds the voices of those most affected by mining. We call on governments and companies to follow the Panel’s recommendation to ensure equitable, inclusive and participatory approaches that will leave no one behind. Let’s make it happen! 👉 Read the full CSO response to the Panel's report: https://lnkd.in/eWpQjaUj With Natural Resource Governance Institute Oxfam EARTHWORKS Climate Action Network International SIRGE Coalition Business & Human Rights Resource Centre European Environmental Bureau Cultural Survival #JustMinerals #JustTransition #IndigenousRights #IndigenousPeoples #Sustainability #Environment #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateJustice #HumanRights

We #DemandRightsatCOP! #COP29 will be hosted in Baku in two months. Azerbaijan's crackdown on civic space is accelarating. PWYP member Gubad Ibadoghlu is among the many voices that are silenced for denouncing corruption, cleptocracy, or human rights violations. COP requires freedom and open dialogue to genuinely address climate goals. Azerbaijan's current environment is fundamentally incompatible with this objective. We are calling on Azerbaijan to release all unjustly detained activists and journalists, and ensure safe participation for all.
