To maximize the value of the KNUST SEG Geophysics Field Camp experience, we strategically organized two separate programs: one for our final-year undergraduate students and another which included graduate students and students from other Universities apart from KNUST. That means over the past two weeks, we successfully provided 40 students with invaluable hands-on training, equipping them for future fieldwork in their careers One step at a time: we keep investing in students' development. This is a testament to our commitment to fostering the next generation of geoscientists. Most African countries depend on natural resources which require geoscience to extract and use. Without the requisite skills, these countries are unable to utilize the resources fully. Our field camps help to do that. In addition, we visited the Bosumtwi Girls STEM Senior High School to spread the word about geophysics and the scientific importance of the Bosumtwi Impact Crater. Outreaches are an essential part of our field camps, and we are grateful to the Headmistress of Bosumtwi Girls STEM SHS for giving us the opportunity to introduce the students to Geophysics. MY SEG FIELD CAMP EXPERIENCE 🙌🎉 On 27th and 28th of August 2024, I participated in the KNUST SEG FIELD CAMP organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG) and the KNUST GEOPHYSICAL SOCIETY. This year’s theme was , "Geophysical Studies of Suevite Deposits in the Lake Bosumtwi Impact Crater". And this camp provided us with a valuable opportunity to apply real world geophysical applications and enhance our understanding of the unique geological formation at Bosumtwi. On the first Day, we engaged in a classroom lecture on the Impact Crater, visit to Lake Bosumtwi and a visit to Bosumtwi Girls' Stem Senior High School to engage with them on Geophysics. For the second day, we engaged in hands-on Geophysical activities, collaborated with our colleagues in groups, and also learned from experienced Geophysicists in the field. The experiences we gained not only enriched our knowledge but also strengthened our passion for geophysics and exploration. A huge thank you to Cyril D. All too soon, we have reached the end of our journey at the KNUST SEG Field Camp 2024. Over the past days, our participants have gained hands-on experience, applied geophysical techniques, and built foundations for their future careers. We’re proud of the hard work and dedication shown by everyone involved. A special thanks to the SEG FOUNDATION for their generous donation, and also to Buck One Limited for joining us with their drone for aerial magnetic data collection. We’re also proud to have hosted students from different parts of the country, making this a truly collaborative experience. The future of geophysics is bright with this next generation of talent! In the true spirit of academia-industry collaboration, we were excited to partner with #BuckOneMiningGeophysics, a leading Ghanaian geophysical company, to introduce a new technique to our Field Camp this year: drone-based magnetic surveys. Adding drone-based surveys (which are rapidly gaining traction in the geophysics world) to the retinue provided our students and faculty with valuable hands-on experience. The ease of use and efficiency of drone-based data acquisition make it a promising technology for reshaping the future of geophysics. It was inspiring to witness our students and faculty enthusiastically embracing this new technique. For me, this was my first time experiencing the acquisition of geophysical data with drones, so it was a real learning opportunity. We're incredibly grateful to #BuckOneMiningGeophysics for taking time out of their busy schedules to share their expertise and contribute to our field camp's success. We look forward to strengthening our partnership and exploring more innovative applications of drones in geophysics. It's truly a full-circle moment, as the project manager at #BuckOneMining, Bannor Kakra Antwi-Boasiako, is a former President of the KNUST GEOPHYSICAL SOCIETY, a former student of the Department of Physics, KNUST, and even my former coursemate! Moreover, the #BuckOneMiningGeophysics team to the field camp was led by Gideon Asenso Mensah (also a former student of the Department of Physics, KNUST and a participant in the 1st KNUST SEG Geophysics Camp in 2022). The team also included Jochebel Ankobiah, another former student of the Department and a participant in the 2022 Field Camp. Hands-on experience is what field camp is all about—turning concepts into actionable insights! Over the past two days, we took our geophysics knowledge straight into the field. Participants conducted resistivity surveys, seismic refraction, GPR, and airborne magnetic surveys, all focused on investigating suevite deposits from the Bosumtwi impact crater.
