The 'Trash to Treasure' workshop hosted by Mckingtorch Zimbabwe was an eye-opening experience. What started as a gathering of 25 strangers, united by a common concern for waste, transformed into a collaborative effort to create something tangible from discarded plastic. Under the expert guidance of Charlene Muguti, we soon realized the potential of plastic waste. By repurposing 500ml water bottles, we constructed a functional refuse bin for the local Gweru Memorial Library. This hands-on experience not only taught us valuable skills in waste management and recycling but also highlighted the importance of value addition in creating sustainable solutions. #Waste is a resource, rather than a problem. By upcycling plastic waste, we can reduce pollution, conserve resources, and create green jobs. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from Charlene and the other participants. ECOFEM HOSTS TAWIAH ESTHER FOR OUR SECOND MENTORING SESSION FOR WOMEN IN TRAINING We are excited about today's session on business registration and governance. Esther Tawiah serves as the Executive Director of the Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED), where she actively works to advance gender equality and empowerment. With over a decade of experience in gender issues, democracy, governance, and elections, she brings valuable insights and a collaborative approach to her role. Tawiah has positively impacted various organizations, including the International Finance Corporation, ECOWAS, and the International Republican Institute, contributing to initiatives that promote effective governance and inclusive decision-making. Her academic background includes a Master's degree in International Politics and International Relations from The University of Manchester, along with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre Arts from the University of Ghana, Legon. Tawiah's commitment to gender empowerment and sustainable development continues to inspire meaningful change in her community and beyond. This week as part of our mentoring sessions for the ECOFEM project Mckingtorch Africa hosted Esther Tawiah who discussed bookkeeping, business registration and other key aspects of making your small business thrive. Her talk was very engaging and accessible to all as she shared her knowledge in both English and Twi) so all could take something away from the session. Tawiah Esther serves as the Executive Director of the Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED), where she actively works to advance gender equality and empowerment. The Active Minds Reading Club team visted St. Mary's Roman Catholic Girls Basic School, our 2nd school, at Korle Gonno, opposite the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. The head of the school, Madam Patience Addy (first picture, 2nd from the right) welcomed us and instructed the students to converge under the beautiful trees for our second educational outreach dubbed "#Recycling and Waste Reduction Program" This school is an all female catholic school with students from Basic 1 to 9 (formerly Class 1 to JHS 3) were taken through the #SDGs, its importance, the effects of plastic pollution on the progress of the SDGs, the environment and our health. The session was facilitated by Rosemary Balami, National Operator and Jessie Ola-Morris , Deputy Board Chair of Young Reporters for the Environment Ghana under the Center for Sustainable Transformation - CEST. Our second receptacle fabricated by Mckingtorch Africa LLC Awuku Makafui was donated to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Girls Basic School to aid with plastic segregation. Students were reminded of their role in keeping their surroundings clean and reducing the amount of single-use plastic in their environment by resorting to "Ghana Must Go", resuable bags and baskets when shopping and the use of reusable bottles and mugs for porridges and other beverages. It was engaging and fun especially during our Q/A session. Students in Basic 7 to 9 (formerly JHS 1 to 3) were taken through the #SDGs, its importance, the effects of plastic pollution on the progress of the SDGs, the environment and our health. The session was facilitated by Rosemary Balami, National Operator and Ebenezer Nkpe, Event Organiser of Young Reporters for the Environment Ghana Center for Sustainable Transformation - CEST. Today as part of the ECOFEM project, trainees had the chance to receive a mentorship workshop about how they can better their business ventures. In this first of many sessions to come, we hosted the CEO of Environment360 Cordie Aziz who spoke about “How to Develop Value Added Strategies for Profit”. She shared many valuable tips on how one can improve profits for their business and the benefits of failure in her presentation and got the trainees engaged as they practiced making value proposition canvases in a group activity. ECOFEM MENTORING WORKSHOPS FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS As part of the recycling business incubation program, we are hosting a couple of successful women business owners to speak on critical topics that border on the ability of girls, women and other youth to succeed at business. Our first session is this week and we are excited about hosting the CEO of Environment360 Cordie AZIZ. PROFILE OF CORDIE AZIZ: Cordie Aziz Nash, is the founder and C.E.O of Environment360, a Ghana based social enterprise that supports reduction of plastic pollution through the development of collection points and processing centers that empower informal sector plastic waste collectors. Under her leadership, Environment360 is the first African organization to receive Verra certification for the trade of plastic credits. Mrs. Aziz Nash is a seasoned entrepreneur that focuses on the development of sustainable green jobs that support Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions. The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has credited the organization with developing the first successful community recycling program, Evolve. Mrs. Aziz Nash has extensive experience in developing and rendering training programs to informal sector plastic collectors, as well as helping early entry stage entrepreneurs develop blueprints to scale impact and activity. She holds a master degree in Public Administration from Bowie State, in Maryland. As well as a bachelor degree in Mass Communications from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS. Before starting Environment360, Mrs. Aziz Nash worked for the United States Congress Committee on Homeland Security and served as the Public Relations Director for the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, the training organization for the largest electrical union in the United States.
