👩🏫Μαζί με την Ορνιθολογική BirdLife Greece διοργανώσαμε δυο εκπαιδευτικά σεμινάρια για την ορθή διαχείριση των περιστατικών με δηλητηριασμένα δολώματα και ζώα στην ύπαιθρο που απευθύνονταν σε υπαλλήλους Δασικών Υπηρεσιών, της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας, του Ο.ΦΥ.ΠΕ.Κ.Α. και της Κυνηγετικής Ομοσπονδίας των Π.Ε. Έβρου και Ροδόπης. ☠️Το θεωρητικό μέρος των σεμιναρίων ήταν εστιασμένο στην ορθή αναγνώριση περιστατικών δηλητηρίασης βάσει έρευνας στη σκηνή του εγκλήματος, στη συστηματική καταγραφή των στοιχείων, στη χρήση των κατάλληλων πρωτοκόλλων και εξοπλισμού για τη συλλογή των δειγμάτων και πειστηρίων. 📑Κατά τη διάρκεια των πρακτικών ασκήσεων, οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν τη δυνατότητα να συνδέσουν τη θεωρία με την πράξη, μέσα από την αναπαράσταση δυο υποθετικών περιστατικών δηλητηρίασης. ➡️Τα σεμινάρια πραγματοποιήθηκαν στο πλαίσιο του διασυνοριακού Προγράμματος LIFE BalkanDetox και της πρωτοβουλίας Δράση για την Άγρια Ζωή, όπου συνολικά συμμετείχαν 67 υπάλληλοι (επιστημονικό προσωπικό και φύλακες) από διαφορετικές αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες. 🔗Διαβάστε περισσότερα https://lnkd.in/ecNAifaV #spbt #Dadia #thraki #poisonbaits #ornithologiki #balkandetoxlife #greekwildlifealliance #wildlifealliance

Our team at the Antikythira Bird Observatory (ABO) systematically investigate threats to the Eleonora's falcon. Recently, a new species of tick that exclusively parasitizes the species has been discovered and described. The study was carried out by the Hellenic Ornithological Society (#BirdLifeGreece) in collaboration with the Veterinary Research Institute of the Hellenic Agricultural Organisation-Dimitra, the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology and the Fraunhofer Institute of Immunology of Germany. This new species for science has currently been identified only in Eleonora's falcon on #Antikythera, while the last time a species in this genus (Haemaphysalis) was described from the Western Palearctic was 75 years ago. Our team will continue the study of its biology, ecology, distribution, and epidemiological significance, as it may be important for the well-being of the Eleonora's falcon and for public health. Ώρα μηδέν για τα Ακαρνανικά Όρη, καθώς οι ήδη εγκατεστημένες Α/Γ και 16 νέοι, παράτυπα αδειοδοτημένοι Αιολικοί Σταθμοί που είναι προ των πυλών, απειλούν με μη αντιστρεπτή καταστροφή την πιο σημαντική περιοχή για τα Όρνια στην ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα. ⚠️ Ούτε η οικολογική σημασία της περιοχής, ούτε καν η σωρεία παρατυπιών που έχουν διαπιστωθεί σε -ήδη- εγκαταστημένα έργα, εμπόδισαν την Περιφέρεια Δυτ. Ελλάδας να επιδοθεί σε ένα (ακόμα) χρονικό αυθαιρεσίας, αδειοδοτώντας 16 (!) νέους Αιολικούς Σταθμούς, της μίας Α/Γ έκαστος, παρά την εμφανή απόπειρα σαλαμοποίησης ενός θηριώδους έργου! ⚠️ Με τη συνεχιζόμενη ανοχή και του Υπουργείου Περιβάλλοντος & Ενέργειας (ΥΠΕΝ), τα #Ακαρνανικά κινδυνεύουν πλέον να μετατραπούν από προπύργιο γυπών και αρπακτικών, σε μία μόνιμη «οικολογική παγίδα» για τα Όρνια. ⛔ Αυτό το ολέθριο σενάριο πρέπει να αποτραπεί! ✨ Striking red eyes, vibrant plumage, impressive diving ability and a deep love for wetlands are only some of the many distinctive features of this month’s migratory bird, the Common Pochard. 🦆 Found across lakes and wetlands in Europe and Asia, the Common Pochard is a medium-sized diving duck that adds a splash of colour to watery landscapes—making them hard to miss when in their full breeding glory! During this season, males show off a striking deep chestnut-red head, black breast, and greyish-white body. In contrast, females embrace a more demure look, with brownish-grey plumage, perfect for blending into their nesting spots.  The Common Pochard is a migratory bird that spends its breeding season in northern and eastern Europe, before flying to western, central, southern Europe and North Africa for the winter. Some birds, breeding in the eastern part of its wide range, winter in south-east and east Asia across the Indian sub-continent, reaching as far as Japan. Overhunting and unsustainable practices have severely impacted Pochard populations, prompting calls for tighter controls. To address the downfall of the already shrinking population, the European Commission proposed to develop a population model and Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM) mechanism. While these models are being developed, it is recommended that all EU countries implement a temporary hunting ban.  BirdLife Partners across Europe are working hard to protect the Common Pochard. BirdLife Partners RSPB in the UK and LPO France in France work in first place to protect key wetland areas. The two organisations manage and restore crucial habitats such as lakes, marshes, and reedbeds that support waterfowl, including Pochards.  BirdWatch Ireland has been engaging in projects to reduce agricultural runoff and improve water quality in lakes and wetlands. These actions are needed as agricultural drainage, water pollution, and eutrophication (excessive increase of nutrients in water bodies) are some of the main causes of wetland degradation. Accurate data on Pochard populations is critical for informing and guiding conservation actions. Satellite tagging and ringing projects help track pochard movements and identify key migration stopover sites and wintering areas. For example, Ορνιθολογική BirdLife Greece and MME/BirdLife Hungary conduct long-term monitoring of waterbird populations, including the Common Pochard, during winter counts and breeding surveys.  In 2023, the Czech Society for Ornithology selected the Common Pochard as their “Bird of the Year”, to draw attention to its conservation needs. This is an example of many education and awareness-raising campaigns that aim at informing the public about the threats faced by Pochards and encouraging sustainable behaviour among local communities.
